5 wire servo on a 1992 DT ????

Hi there,
Ive bought a 1992 DT as a non runner and got it running. I've de-restricted the exhaust, easy job with a Dremel. and bought a powervalve servo kit. The only problem Ive got is that the servo has 5 wires and the DT has only 3. I've looked at the servo and 2 wires go to the motor and 3 go to a potentiometer on the pulley. This looks fine but I don't know how the 3 wire version is wired up, and to be honest I can't figure out how 3 wires can be used.... So could somebody let me know how a 3 wire servo is wired up? Even better would be if somebody wants to swap a 3 wire servo for my 5 wire servo!

Merry Christmas!

I bought it off a bloke who was selling an engine, so I just asked for all the powervalve and servo kit, got it for £50 so was pretty chuffed. I knew it a 5 wire servo but I figure it must be possible to use it.... somehow!

may be easier to get the wireing loom to go with the servo motor, might be an easier option

It turns out that the RD350 and TZR250 have powervalve controllers, which have a 2 wire connector, a 4 wire connector and 2 single wire connectors. This connects between the servo and the CDI and bobs your uncle, well not quite that simple! The RD have different timings to the TZR, I think the TZR is the one to go for. An alternative is to get a programmable powervalve controller, so the following link.

£150 is a bit too pricey for me! I'd have a go at making one if I could find out what was required.

Another alternative is to go for an EXUP controller, I've read a post stating the R1 controller works but I cant see why any EXUP controller shouldn't work.

I'll post again when I finally get a controller!

The difference is that the old servos had the controller built in, this is how they use only 3 wires, 0V, 12V and Revs. The newer DTs have the controller built in to the CDI so 5 wires go to the servo, 2 to the motor and 3 to the potentiometer for position feedback. Now as I posted earlier RDs TZRs and EXUPs all have a seperate controller which should work between the CDI and a 5 wire Servo. I've just bought an RD one off eBay so I'll find out as soon as I get it. I'm considering ripping the controller apart to see what makes it tick, with a view to making one from scratch. This way I could make one with adjustable set points. I figure 3 adjustments, start opening revs and fully open revs, with adjustable rate of opening perhaps. I'm guessing at the moment as I don't have one yet.

If anyone's got a faulty controller or servo they'd like to donate it would be much appreciated!

sorry mate my computer skills are pretty bad im affraid, could try when my kids come over on friday, obviously on the 2 stroke section and i think there are 17 pages, and its on the 16th under ypvs help, but someone also mentioned about manually opening them using a cable off the throttle linked to a stepper motor, and that stan stevens used to do them for tzr250 and rd 350s. i will try and find this info for you today and point you in its direction.oh and i managed to get a 3 wire servo the other day of a balgrada will keep my eyes peeled for you

yep page 16 on ypvs help.but i dont know if it will help solve the problem you have,i think you can buy the brain to go with the servo from yamy but its 160 quid, but i cant see why a manually operated one couldnt work, straight off the throttle, now i couldnt work out how to do that but like i said earlier somebody has done it, maybe it is stan stevens, but i cant find the thread anymore, i will carry on looking tho mate

Finally got my YPVS fully functional! I've managed to buy a Servo from a 1995 TDR125 and that has the controller built in. So now my YPVS is fully finctional, but it actually make the bike feel slower as the powerband doesn't kick is quite as strong. The bottom end is much better and falling below 7000 rpm in top no longer results in the bike slowing down as it used to. So its faster but doesn't feel it!
If I was to aquire a DT in the future I'd just turn the powervalve round and remove the exhaust restricter, I don't think I'd bother with the YPVS kit! Although it is more civilised but perhaps thats the problem!
I still fancy making a controller, and now I have a spare 5 wire servo. null

Any more joy on this.

Ive got a DT200R and if i am right it has a 3 wire.

I have a controler here off a WR200 i bought with a few other bits and i was thinking i could use it.

Would there be any benifit??

I have 2x DT200R's a 1990 and a 91 model. One was missing the controller and quite a few other bits.
I have a third DT200R on the way.
Planning on making up 2 200's and the third rolling frame i was going to put an AG200 or DT175 motor in.

Bob.
