My DT had a ratttle now lost power!!!!!

Something went wrong with my DT 125.Went to start my bike yesterday, I kicked it over as usual but there was a rattle coming from a little white box that sits under the rear mud guard on the opposite side to the exhaust (it also has 3 wires coming from it). The rattle finally stopped but as soon as it did the battery is now holding no charge and the ignition light doesnt stay on unless kicked over.  When riding the revs get to 7000rpm but the engine does not rev any hire, although the rev counter still goes up.  When starting the ignition I no longer get the power valve turning on.

I dont know a great deal about bikes, but recon if I change the battery all problems will hopefully be fixed. But if anyone has any idea how it all happened would be great to hear from you.

Sounds like your electrics need to be looked at. Im wondering if the "little white box" is the flasher relay. Ive never seen the insides of a DT so cant be sure.

You've got no power above 7k rpm as this is when the power valve kicks in which is operated electrically. You might have a short in the electrics hence no charge in the battery. A similar thing happened to when the main fues blew. The engine was running but the electrics had packed in.

Cheers for that.
don't suppose you know where the fuses are? as i'll check them (if i can find 'em) and charge the battery tonight, see if it's a simple fix. if not i'll take it to the shop.
is it wise to stop riding it untill it's fixed do you recon, or is it ok for some short trips?

i never realised how much the power valve effected the bike, it's strange riding it with no power band at all, reminds me of my scooter days!

Sorry like i say ive never seen the insides of a DT

However there is a link to the DT haynes manual floating about somewhere on this site.

Should be ok to ride so long as the rest of the electrics work.

scrolling through the Haynes manual, i found the 'little white box' that was vibrating is the neutral relay.
is this ok to un clip and open up?!

i called up my local garage and explained the situation.
they reconed and were right that one of the cells in my battery and died, so replacing the battery solved all problems!

Many thanks for all your input and help

Remember reading this thread along time ago, never thought much of it...but my god its usefull now...
Tonight I was experimenting with some LEDs making up a new rear light and it was all good untill i accidentally crossed wires which i thing blew the LED's and may have damged this "little white box" (sits behind the coolant resovoir right?) that turns out, thanks to this thread is the neutral relay. Now it buzzs like fooook and is quite concerning not to mention the lack of power past 7000 revs (presume the powervalue isn't working too too well, because of the electric issues at the neutral relay?!) anyways just wanted to double check getting a new battery fixed these issues for you.

current symptons of my bike;
no power past 7k
noticable buzzing from "neutral relay" when ticking over
extremely slow indicators and they hardly flash
no horn

surely the answer would be to buy a new neutral relay...

I can make do, by just disabling the powervalue server and having the powervalue pinned open but I am still worried about the electrics, please get back asap...

I can confirm this.
'Ticking' neutral relay under the mudguard of the bike
+ No power to the electronics while the engine is OFF
+ Having power to the electronics while the engine is ON

= You need a new battery

as mentioned before, one of the cells in the battery died, put a new battery in and all worked fine after that.
Netural realy and electronics were fine afterwards!

Easiest fix to a problem i've had yet.

hope you get working

so what speed did your bike go to when you changed the battery ?

does the battery effect the speed and top speed of the bike ?

that could be whats wrong with mine it just needs a new battery, as the lights dont really work unless the engine is revving, neither does the horn!! and the bike wont go past 65

reckon i need a new battery ?

Dont worry about the lights only going brite when the engines revin, all dts are like that but the horn should work without revin the bike.

Im not 100% sure mate but i think the battery could make a difference, you wont lose anything for trying it though mate,if you put a new battery in her and it improoves youve gained something and you will be sorted,if it dont make a difference your no worse off than you are now.

depending upon weather conditions my bike will do around 80mph sitting up (not lying on the tank - you look a bit of a TW@T if you do that!)

i brought mine second hand from a dealer, they never mentioned any modifications when i brought it.
the needle will flatten out at 80, and still feels like it's creeping on.

i know the exahust isn't a standard one, could only this give me that extra speed? or has somehting else maybe been modified?

had a fright the other day. my bike sits under a lean-to i made against my shed. A tree which bends over the sehd and my bike had rotted through and collapsed right on top of my bike!
after the intial freak out and upon closer inspection all this huge tree had done was bend the wing mirror!
Thankyou Yamaha for making everything rubber mounted!

as i said before

This is how you can tell if your battery's dead:
Older DT: Turn key - no sound, no lights
Newer DT: Turn key - no sound, no lights, no headlight

The sound is the powervalve being adjusted automatically, if you have no battery then it would (probably, i havn't checked) allways stay in the restricted position

Haha, fuse blew when wires crossed...ahh noob error

Ps. Darkangel, with a break in your electrics, whether its a fuse, neutral relay, battery etc the powervalue doesn't "clean/adjust/relube" itself and does stay in the restricted position giving you no power after 7k

Pss. PaulyWalnuts, an aftermarket exhaust would, in nearly all cases would benefit your performance. Lucky about yout tree incident btw too! I had some 50cc smash into the back of me last month, we both hit the deck and I came away with only a dent in my rim...no plastics broken whatsoever, same couldn't be said for his Derbi (or Debri as I like to call them) it was so so messed up - talking rad, plastics, engine mounts, forks, handlebars and god knows what else. Gotta love Dt's (Y)

i dont get any power to the lights when the engine is off, but my power valve noise is fine ??
