Trust me I will mate , the hub has been tampered with before and has been badly liquid metalled back together . The bearing is moulded into the metal making it impossible to remove without cracking everything .

And obviously I need the bearing gone so I can powdercoat them . Went to Yam today and showed it about , they said it can still use just cant coat . So in other words its useless

Is it possible to use an earlier dtr front hub to the excel rim? and keep your old forks?

It is mate , but then i'd lose the big brake convo lol

Right so back from Yam and everything's good to go on Monday to coaters . £80 for everything coated ( not giving away my colour scheme yet ) .

Still undecided what to do about the front hub . I mean it's £91 for a new one but that's a bit much . Yamaha said I should get it repaired and just use the speedo thing as a spacer . Still not sure though , I don't even need them coated because they're just dirty , but a nice new one would be safer . Will clean them tomorrow and see how I feel

This was a cnut to do

Fork legs ready to go

Caliper ready to go ( actually I should strip the rear one and get it done same time )

Most bits ready to go on Monday

Take the hub to an engineering company. They can probably weld up the damage for beer money.Whatever you do please make sure its gonna be safe.Hate to see this bike go through the hedge after the first few miles!

LMFAO major F A I L disbelief

So about an hour ago I got chopping at my rear caliper so I can get it coated same time .

Got all bolts out etc ( eventually ) then got to a last bit of rubber that wouldn't come out .

Long story short I completely ruined it , the rubber is holding a cup in place that WILL NOT budge , so this calipers going in the bin !!!! More money !!!! furious

But 2 mins ago I realised what I thought was the rear brake .... was the front lmao

So rear caliper is safe and I'm not touching anything else tonight biggrin

Still a bit worried though cause it seems like the rear has the same rubber as the front . It will not come out I'm betting , so may not be able to powdercoat the rear bleh

Ruined front caliper

The rubber bit I ruined confuse

And the ( for now ) safe rear caliper biggrin

you need to reconnect the brake with no pads in and pump it till the piston pops out then the seal will just pull out m8

if you get that caliper powdered you will have a hell of a time getting a new seal and the piston to seat back in and the brakes will bind

No idea what you mean mate lol .

The front brembo wasnt the same as this , there was no rubber cup thing . Ah well might leave the coating then

the cup thing that sits in the middle is a piston its what pushes the brake pads against the disc behind the piston is the brake fluid
the black rubber thing round it is the piston seal it stops the fluid from escaping past the piston when the brake is pushed

to remove the piston cup you need to have your brakes plumbed back in so you can use your brake lever to pump the brakes so the piston pushes completely out after that the seal is easy to get to and can be simply pulled out

the problem with powdercoat is it gets in everywhere behind the piston the fluid comes in through small channels and if they get filled the fluid cant get in and the piston wont move = no brakes

the other problem is the seal needs to sit perfect in its seat and a layer of coating is enough to make it sit funny
if this happens the seal rubs against the piston and stops it retracting back so basicaly your brakes get stuck on and drag on the disc its a real ball ache rust in the seat causes the same problems

The seal you have ripped out is just the dust seal.No biggie! The fluid seal can't be taken out until the piston has been removed.
Your going to have to take the piston and seals out before you coat 'em mate. Also make sure the coater masks off everything that doesn't need coating or as baz says the brakes will either not work or drag.
Its gonna be easier and simpler to paint 'em.

Hmm ok i'm with you now . Hooking the brakes back up is a big no no so this is what i'm gonna do ...

Will get the Brembo done as it has no dust seals , just a big piston . Theres no space between it and the walls so no dust thing could fit there anyway . Will get them to mask it off so no paint goes in ( you cant see it when back together anyway . Front will be OK

The rear im not going to coat . I'll get the bracket coated and later on i'll paint the rear caliper myself . Will mask it up and paint it as is ( all together )

Better idea ?

You just got to hope that when they bake the parts in the oven it won't melt the piston seal. The piston seal sits round the piston but further down the body. This stops fluid leaking past the piston and gives the pressure on the brakes.
My honest advice is to paint both calipers but its up to you mate

How long till they're on the bike then?

Also do you know of any rim builders who could supply some budget rims with the same dimensions as these?

haha for a min there i thought you said 400 pounds ...... oh fook yes you did

your quest for mint-ness is amazing and borderline fanatical i applaud your work m8

there is one thing thats bothering me though which is what is this dt to become when its finished a concourse show bike,a nice ride about town ,or will it get to see some mud ,thing is sometimes when you put your heart, soul, and **** loads of cash into a build it can make you well too scared to use it to its full potential in fear of it picking up scratches and dings which begs the question will the finished product match the reason that it was stripped down in the first place ?

yes m8 but it kinda defeats the object as what would this build be used for ?

theres a guy on my fighter site who spent the best part of 2 years and around 15 thousand and some pounds building his bike we all followed the thread and awaited the result
thing is a week after he finished he put it up for sale at a loss why you may ask? well how would you feel dodging traffic sitting on 15 grand
id say there is a lesson learned there biggrin

Good question ...

This is what i'm like mate , I cant help it . Tbh I dont even need a bike but from the day i was born ive wanted a motocross bike . Older I get the more and more i'm realising theres more fun in actually building things . I go too far , and ususally overdo it ... but nothing makes me happier .

Unfortunately this means having to spend ££ , which I dont have much of , but I dont do what normal people do with their money . Dont drink , go out , no kids , no holidays , nothing .

I'm sure i'll pet it in its first few months , but that'll wear off . It's weird i prefer offroad bikes but would rather ride onroad lol . The SM part is only recent , just thought it'd make a 2000 twist to it . If I had the money in one go id have bought one straight out , this is my way of killing time really , its crazy but im enjoying it lol
