Last week I pulled the bike out of the garage and tried to start it, well after 15 mins it didn't start so I took the plug out and gave it a clean (the plug was clean only had some petrol on it). Plug cleaned and back in the bike it started first kick, problem solved I thought.

I had np with the bike out on my run last week so yesterday I drag the bike out again and try to kick it doesn't kick, again I clean the plug and put it back well it started and then spluttered to a stop and wouldn't start again.

Today I went and bought a new plug the bike started great but when I was revving it the revs would jump up and down if i pinned the throttle open. Like it would bounce between 6k and 8k with out me rolling off the throttle??

I decided to try the bike on the road after I warmed it up for about 10 mins about a mile away from my home in 2nd gear it started bogging out on me so I bumped it up a gear and went back home, seemed like if I went over 6k it would just die. Forgot to mention it was raining today unlike last week when I was out.

My unlce said the HT lead might need cleaning or a new one, has anyone got any ideas?

you may need to clean the carb

is the bike running rich (smoking alot) if it is rich it will wear out your plugs real quick

has the airfilter got clogged or is it wet

if its starting ok and it will actually run then it wont be electrical

Could be water in the ht cap/ht lead.Undo it and give a squirt of wd40
Could be water or dirt in the carb.Water will sit in the bottom of the float bowl and will get sucked up at higher rpm.Or just dirt blocking the main jet.
If that 'aint the problem then take the left hand engine casing off and wd40 the stator, flywheel and pickups.
Pretty sure it'll be one of those mate

Thanx lads gonna clean the HT lead, check the stator, flywheel and pickups tomorrow. Might leave the crab because ive never cleaned one before ill check the easier stuff before taking the carb apart.

Is taking the HT lead of an easy job?

But, problem aside ...

Is there not a rev limiter built into CDI ? which would do the bouncing thing above if you reved it's baws off with no load ??

Can't say i've ever tried it ... ?

I don't think so mate ive revved the tights of off it before lots of times in neutral and its never bounced back and forth between the revvs like that.

Does sound like a DAMP issue ..

'Cos i know you get good n' muddy & the weathers $hite ... !

& it was running fine last time you used it !?

Stating obvious, but gap plug up too !

Never needed to gap the plug up in 3 years of owning the bike does it make any difference? I don't have any feeler gauges at the moment.

I think it is definitely a damp issue (like you say) because even though the bike is kept in a garage it has been put away wet and it was soaking all over both times ive checked in the last couple of weeks.

0.7 to 0.8 of a MM

on 04 onwards ...check manual for yours but prob same ...

Doubt it cause you problems, have a look at old gap & see if similar to new gap, but i think they come wider than that ..

But it's not the root of your prob' ..

Clean all the LT side connectors up & check all tight, good blast of WD as per Gix' ...

worth gapping when you get chance though !

Most ngk plugs are pre gapped at 0.7mm.
Dt doesn't have any rev limit fitted to it.Its revs until the limiting factors stop it e.g. air volume,fuel mixture,carb size
The ht lead cannot be seperated from the coil.You can attach a new lead to a short piece of the old lead by using an inline suppressor but they aren't very efficient.

but if it was a damp issue would it not misfire and splutter all through the rev range not just at 6k ?
i put money on the carb myself either water in the fuel or a bit of poo in the bowl

It has spluttered and miss fired in the rain before back in the summer.

Well I cleaned the HT cable then sprayed it all with WD40, took the left side engine case off and cleaned and WD40 ed that, put it all back together and it seems like the problem has been fixed.

Was out today for about an hour and covered roughly 60 miles without any problems the real test will be when its wet again.

Though if your HT side is now glistening with WD ...

I recon' it should be ok in the wet .. !

Hope so mate I get pissed of with the bike when it doesn't work so today after I went out and everything was fine I washed it for being good. The wheels were covered in surface rust the back wheel was all yellow it was that bad :). Just need a new chain & sprocket set now the chain so lose it rattles all the time.

Are the spark plug cap seals fitted and in good order?
Do you have an ngk plug cap? If not then change it
It sounds as though water from the front wheel is getting on the plug or cap

Its definitley the wet that is doing it, I dont think I have a NGK plug cap although I bought a new NGK spark plug last week. What are the spark plug seals Gav? As you can tell I know feck all about bikes :(.

Ngk plug caps are the best to use.A 90 degree one to fit a dt will be about 3 quid.
The seals are rubbers that fit over the ends of the cap to keep water out.Without the seals the water will go straight onto the plug or HT lead.
My advice is to fit a new ngk plugcap.They come with seals on them.
If it carries on dying in the wet at least you have ruled out one possibility

Gav does the new plug cover have to have the same number as the spark plug??

Unscrew the old one out of the HT lead and screw the new one on.Make sure you put the rubber seal on the lead before screwing the new cap home.You will know what i mean when you see it.

I had the same problem with my bike in the wet, it would bog down at 6000 revs and sometimes at lower revs too if it was really wet, I tried everything, new plug cap, new coil, covering the whole thing in insulation tape etc, nothing worked. My bike was running way too rich at the time and since I sorted that out it runs absolutely fine. I think cos it was running so rich, in the rain it just couldn't get up to temperature so was misfiring all the time. How far does your temp guage go up to in the rain, is it normal or lower than usual?

Do rainy days make that much difference to running temp of cylinder on water cooled bikes ??

Air cooled, i can see it ...

Dunno as my pants DT has no temp gauge ! Just a ****ty light which im assuming when it comes on ...

[if it's not fecked, as seems no test facility !]

My bike is very smokey when I start it up and it will stay like that untill I take of, even if I leave the bike ideling for 15 mins it still smokes like a bitch.

 

Ill keep that in mind mate if the new spark plug cover doesn't fix the problem.

They don't really warm up properly at tickover, the best way to warm it up is to just rev it until it revs smoothly but the neighbours wouldn't like that on a morning and you'd probably choke on all the smoke. They don't half make a lot of smoke though, it's unbelievable, I'd never realised until I let my mate have a go on it, the bike hadn't been started that day and when he took off it was like a steam train had gone past, I was suddenly in a big cloud of grey smoke. Love it!
Is your DT a newer one Simson? Cos I don't know why they got rid of the old clocks the new ones are well gay.

If its smoking really heavily even when warmed up you should keep an eye on the gearbox oil level.It could be the crank seals are leaking
Best way to warm a motor up is to continually blip the throttle, exactly as they do in the pits before the bike goes out on track
The temperature of an engine will be slightly lower in the rain but unlikely to cause any detrimental effects

But the styling is a deffo improvement on the
slab sider early ones,
Very sharp styling [for a DT !] with Butch Sweepy Things As Rad Shrouds..
