polsta back for the summer ,engine re built !!!!!

Hello lads how we all doing ???

those of you will remember me, aa, gixer gav etc , nice to be back !!

been busy over the last 6 months, passed my driving test about 5 weeks ago and got me a 186 mk3 ford escort on the road, been loving it !!

now the nice weather is here ive had my bottom end re built, new conrod, crank, bearings etc etc and picked it up today smile.gif)

got all the parts all together and the bikes ready to be put back together in the morning and i cant wait to fire it back up , then take it and get a new mot and im back on the road, just need to run it in for 500 miles, which il clock up asap so she can be fully boosting again !!!

quick recap ...1998 dtr, i had a mission to get it fully boosting after nto going past 60 odd, and de restricted, power valve pegged open, big one exhaust, then after gav advised me...put the standard front pipe back on,took her out and it flew and was 85 odd mph i think and popping up wheeling in 1st n 2nd and was awsome... 2 days and the crank went furious , been off the road all winter but now shes back !!!

cant wait to get it back on the road and the fun to commence !!! hopefully if all goes well tomorrow, the mot place is only 3 miles away, so hope they can fit me in tomorrow or friday !!

polsta, BACK IN BUSINESS !!!! biggrin

heres a pic of the bike , but since the pic ive put a brand new blue seat cover on, and the standard front pipe , il take some new pics when shes back on the road !

il be on the road for a year, then my cbt runs out, and its a year gap , im not paying £450 or whatever and doing a full test , to just keep the dt on the road, il prob keep it off the road for a year then just do a cbt again,  i think its out of order than you cant just do a 125 cbt and stay on the 125 for as long as you wish,  more so if you have a full driving license and a car on the road , i dont want to do a full test and end up thinking i just aswell have a 4 or 600, I LOVE THE DTR !!!

Glad to hear your back on the road again matey!
OK down to business

Check all fluid levels after your test ride.

Do not labour the engine or exceed 5k rpm for 150 miles.Do blip the throttle when you come to a stop.Don't let the bike idle for too long during the first 150 miles or you can glaze the bore. You know how they warm up the race bikes in the pits? Like that

After 150 miles you can rev to 7k rpm.Accelerate hard upto 7k occasionally but dont cruise round at 7k

At 300 you can use full throttle in short bursts.Do not ride it flat out

At 450-500 miles let 'er rip!

I'm certain the law changed allowing cbt users to simply retake their cbt after three years to prevent the loss of one year.Check it out

No need to do a car testwink.I just bought this the other day.Can be driven on the bike license.Eventually will probably end up with a bike engine in it if it ever breaks! Great fun

Hello gav, thanks for this reply mate ...useful info as i have never ran a bike in before and have no idea about it, done 8 miles test ride, not going over 5k (the bloke who rebuilt said do 500 miles under 5k)

, all seemed well and rode fine, as ive got the power valve pegged open theres no spike increase in power under 5k so its all plai sailing, gonna get out on it as much as pos over the next cple of weeks clock up the miles

i put it back in the shed after the ride as its getting dark and i got work soon n had to have dinner, il check the fluid levels in the morning and take her back out, going to ring the mot place in the morn and see if the can fit it in tomorrow , cant see any problems at all, the bikes all working perfect and looking great !

couple of qs....

what do you mean by blip the throttle as i come to a stop ??

also what do you mean by glaze the bore ? the barrel and piston is my old one,it didnt need to be done and he said its totaly fine, ive had a full bottom end re build and new bearings, con rod, crank rebuild etc

everythings working fine and it rode fine, however once mot`d im gonna ride it to the blokes workshop who did the rebuild, and get him to have a quick look over it, check all the cables and ajust them etc and just check everythings as it should be and all in order , and also show him the bikes hes helped put back on the road, as he was asking me about it, and hes only seen the engine !!

heres some pics i took today, only gave it a quick wipe with a damp tea towel and shes looking lovely, superb condition for a 1998, cant wait to give it a proper clean and polish it all up !

FFS That's a clean DT I was expecting it to be a bit more tatty considering its a 90's bike. When Gav means blip the throttle he means give it a wee short revv when you come to a stop like you do when your changing down gears, if youve ever seen the start of a motorcross race youll know what Gav means.

cheers baz, she is a beaut , whats yours like ?

it went straight through the mot today no problems, just had to buy a new battery coz the old one wasnt holding the charge

so now its all sorted and im on the road biggrin

its gonna be a pain doing the running in, felt like i was on a 50 today, where the power valves pegged open the bottom end isnt great, and it struggled up hill a bit, and with the l plates on ppl prob think im a div on a 50 LOL

cant wait to get to that 450 mile mark and open her up, its running and sounding and looking sweet !!

done about 35 miles so far, gonna do some more this arvo and get it run in asap ,cant wait to be fully boosting !furiousevileye

The cars a microcar virgo. The one i have is top of the range with alloys, remote locking, walnut dashbiggrin etc. It can be driven on a B1 licence which you will have if you passed your bike test before 2001.Its belt drive and is just like a scooter rev and go.Its restricted to 70 but cruise along happy enough at 60.Its weight is 470 kg so handles like a go kart.

If you haven't had a top end rebuild then theres no need to blip the throttle.I thought you had the top end refreshed too.If its the old one it will be fine.

If its only the bottom end that has been rebuilt thentheres no need to run in for 500 miles, gentle running for 100 miles or so will be adequate.Dont rev above 7k before 100 miles though

its all to do with personal taste m8 im a fan of nice example stock bikes but i am also the lover of hevily modified bikes it depends what you want from your bike

the acerbis hand guards are a good upgrade as the stock dt ones are a bit pants

i havent had much time to update the shop recently theres still loads more to go into it i will be fully dedicated to it in a couple of months as im in the process of going self employed with my online shops plus e bay too

im hoping to stock a lot of used spares too so we cater for everyone im also going to be looking into supermoto kits and fabricating one off performance parts just for the dt's so watch this space biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

are you 110% certain of this gav ? the bloke who did it said 500 miles ? its only the bottom end thats been done, ive done 40 odd miles already, so could clock up 60 tomorrow i reckon in a couple of hours , as ive got the power valve pegged open, theres not a lot of power below 5k, the power band starts to come in about 4.5-5k , so im limited to about 35-40mph

i want to be certain its 100% before ii use the power , dont want anything to go wrong !!

cheers G, polsta

Yeah it'll be fine.Ne real need to run a fresh crank in.Just 100 miles or so to bed all the new parts down.If the top end is already run in then it will be fine

cheers felllas, im just about to go out n clock up a few miles ,done about 75 so far, last night the bike wouldnt start properly and i think i flooded it,i checked the plug and its a bit oiley, so i cleaned it up and left it out, and im just gonna put it back in now

i think it may be running a bit rich ?

when it was put back together the other day i didnt really know how to ajust everything properly, any sort of guide what i can do lads to make sure everythings ajusted and running right ? and also what to do if its running a little rich ?

or is that maybe just coz i have to keep the revs low and the engines not really working hard ?

cheers fellas

been out today and clocked up 40 odd miles, its not running right, after its been sat all night/lond period of time it fires up and runs fine, then after 20 odd miles it starts playing up and wont re start properly n needs a rest, then it seems to get bogged out again after a few miles, looks to me like its the carb/fuel/oil/ settings , all need tuning and ajusting so its running perfect..which im not sure sure how to do it all properly ? !
