i think tapping power valve

could do with some help plese lads ive got 2003 dtr there is a tapping noise coming from pv or head reason i think pv is couse i took right side pv cover off and u can move the pin [with the off center allen key in it] slightly and taps on caseing or is this couse i took cover off. do covers and bushes in pv wear dose any 1 no how much they are. i looked up exust hole with tourch piston looked ok no scatches there is brown ring about 10 mm down from bottom ring is this normal. one more thing i hav to put my mixter screw all the way in on my carb for it to run sound dose this meen i need bigger jet . thanksconfuse

ive took head off now piston looks ok but moves from side to side very easy does this mean top end bearing has gon. there is also slight side to side play on con rod but no up and down play is this how it shud be?

having your mixture screw all the way in will kill your bike m8 it will make it run way too lean it should be 1 1/2 turns out at all times then if its running poo then there must be another problem

running it so lean may have damaged your piston check the piston over for signs of cracking and check the rings over too did the noise start soom after you messed with the mix screw

side to side movement in the piston and conrod is normal its up and down movement which is the problem it should have a little play up and down but anything else is a sign of wear

i recently had a similar noise to yours on my bike and one of my rings had snapped so pay particular attention to this area

but sort that screw out m8 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cheers m8 i cheked piston looks ok realy light rub marks on side i would hav thought this was what to expect on used piston. rings look ok to. there is burn marks under bottom ring i think. there brown or is this oil ?                                        i think i will get new piston and rings anyway not sure if to get rebore barrel looks ok. how much is good rebore and piston i want bike to last   

power valve does wobel a little bit in head im going to see how much new bushes are from yam dealer [ripoff i bet]  i still think noise was comein from here. im prob wrong tho lol  
                                                                                                                                this thing with mixter screw i just got carb i set screw 1 and 1/4 tunes out and it would not run prop had to hav it ideling at 2thou nd it boged if i gev it to much throtel then it would cut out after abit anyway it ran better with choke on. but when i turned it in all the way it ran sound i could get the idle down and it reved sound. bike was warm when i did all this. i cheked spark plug after this it was dark brown black thort this ment mixter was ok. help plz i dont wont to kill it.  no.gif 

            also my bike reves in the valve to 12 thou my m8 has 2000 model [the same bike i think] it only revs in the valve to 10 thou the band kicks in at 6 thou on both of them we hav same derestrict snorkel airbox and full dep with pv working proply ny one no y this is?

if your getting a piston then get a rebore m8

rebore should cost about 30 quid and i sell high quality pistons in my shop just click the link under this post if you want to have a look if you dont re bore then you could get piston slap

if the plug is black its running too rich but its not the mixture screw at fault the mix screw should always be 1 1/2 turns out and just to rule it out im guessing you do know which is the mixture screw and which is the idle screw?

if its running rich it could be a few things check the oil pump settings,check your air filter isnt clogged ect also has your carb jet been changed to one that may be too big ? best to start with the basics first set everything up as it should be then rule things out one by one

put the snorkel back on your bike it isnt a restriction and makes no difference to power its an urban myth and will only do more harm then good

the only reson your mates bike revs higher is probably because he has it set up right

one other thing take some time to read through the forum posts you may find it helpful theres loads of useful info on here including all you should need to know on restrictions :)

thanks for info m8 i think i will get rebore shop near me said if i get piston there match the bore for 20 quid.

i do know which screw is mixter lol

not sure about oil pump settings tho ill check hayns. ill take alook at jet size.

whats best to clean air fillter iv bin told petrol or is it best to get new one . also the sponge bit on the plastic that slides in is a bit warn were do i get this as it dont come with air filter.

i think i will put snorkel back on

its my bike that revs higher probly to do with bad set up by the looks of things

ive read every post on this forem and serched web befor i asked queston you never seem to get a straight answer

thanks for your info tho m8 ill set every thing up how it says in hayns when i put it back together.

hopefully noise will b gone cus all the things ive looked at to do with tapping noises in head near pv has bin becouse rings or piston and mine looked fine when i took it apart

ill keep updating this as anyone with same probs might find it usefull
