my friend has a 2001 yamaha that sounds different than my 1998 yamaha and i wonder if they put different engines in the newer models?

i know that the 2004 and up models had more HP but  i wanna know the difference between the 1998 models and the newer/older ones

the newer the bikes the more restricted they get so i very much doubt they have more hp as the older dtr's claim to be the fastest

so whats up with the 1998 models? i've heard that some are not restricted at all

and i know that some of the 1998 models have a small cdi box in front of the oil tank (mine does not have it) and could the different sound be caused by another silencer in the newer models? bc my friends 2001 all stock yamaha dt 125 sounds way sharper than my 98 yamaha , my yamaha kinda sounds like an old diesel truck at low revs biggrin

at a guess m8 its probably when yamaha brought in the restrictions on the reg change hence some being restricted more than others

your probably right with the exhaust its probably a case of your bike being fitted with the later exhaust have you gutted it out yet?

its not what it sounds like but more what it goes like that counts m8:)

ONLY ON SOME 97 THROUGH 2000 MODELS

AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TWO STOKE OIL TANK AT THE FRONT YOU WILL FIND A SMALL SILVER/GREY BOX WITH FOUR WIRES COMING OUT OF IT - THESE ARE WIRES SWITCHING THE ORIGINAL CDI UNIT - THE COLOURED WIRES ARE RED, YELLOW, BLUE AND GREEN.

THE RED GOES ON A BROWN OUT OF THE REGULATOR
THE YELLOW GOES TO A RED / WHITE STRIPED - INTO THE IGNITION PULSE COIL UNDER THE LEFT HAND ENGINE CASING.
THE GREEN GOES TO THE RED/WHITE FROM THE CDI
THE BLUE GOES INTO A PLUG FROM WHERE THE YELLOW ONE IS COMING FROM.

NOW FOR THE CHANGES - TAKE THE RED ONE - MARK IT AND ISOLATE IT - DO THE SAME FOR THE BLUE ONE. YELLOW AND GREEN WILL REMAIN, JOIN THEM TOGETHER THEN JOIN THE 2 REMAINING RED/WHITE STRIPED WIRES. MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS PROPERLY INSULATED AND REASSEMBLED. HOPE YOU GOT ALL THAT !!!!! READ IT A FEW TIMES AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND IT.

yes its true older dtrs are faster but like dave said they have more restricters so use ya noggin!, derestrict the new engine you have the same power and then think would a older engine go quicker than a new one? NO wear and tear mates loss of power

thanks for all the info guys.

and i don't want to derestrict the bike because there are some strict laws in sweden and a 125 cc motorcycle can not have more than 11 KW (15 hp) of power if you have a A1 license which i'll soon have :D

im pretty happy with the 9kw or 13.9 hp that my bike has and the top speed is about 120 km/h or 74 mph my friends 2001 dt does about 110 km/h or 68 mph

2004 onwards dt engines are completely different and are faster and not as restricted as the old ones because the law now says u can have up to 14bhp and it used to be 12!
dtre/dtx are same as tz engines and all the reed block is completely different also the generator behind left hand casing and 89-03 std jetting is 240 and 04-08 is 210 but a 240 in a 04 onwards dt then go against a old dt with same layout and the 04 will win hands down never lost to a dtr :) 0.5m tz piston and last rebore is why lol x
