when at idle i can hear a rattling sound and i know that someone had this problem before i can't figure out where it might be coming from sounds like it's coming from the cylinder area
can anyone tell me what it is? bc it's driving me nuts!
oh and i forgot to add that the bike only has about 6000 miles on the clock so it's probably not the piston

why cant it be the piston? only moving part in the cylinder is the piston and small end bearing... you can easily **** a piston/little end bearing in 6000 miles.. redlining a dt constantly would do it in no time...

a girl had the bike before me and she was the first owner and it's been restricted since new and it wont go past 8.5 k rpms while riding so i dont think it is the piston. maybe i should record a video so that you can hear what the rattling sounds like
vid would be good.. might even be normal as most dts/tzrs ive seen/rode/heard have a slight rattle on tick over that goes away when the engine is under load.. Ive always assumed it was a quirk of the engine...

I had a ratlling sound after the piston seized in my 20K engine..lol
A rebore/new piston and little end, sorted that out. Little end bearings are a somwhat **** in DTR. U get a good one it lasts for ages, and ive had a new one that lasted only 500miles.
Pays to get genuine Yam if u can.
other than that its the crank bearing, or play in the side bearings.
Try this.. if u rev it to say 5K does it goes ?.. let it tick over, and then adjust the tick over screw on the carb so it runnig at its slowest before stall. Does the knock get lots worse?
If it does. then i would say Little end, or wosrt piston side play/crank bearings.
Where can i get all the bearings for a fresh rebuild ? Because in Belgium it seem verry difficult to order things for a Yamaha dt 125 r And what are the little end bearings because whe don't use that name ?

you can get them from yamaha dealers or on ebay. They are available on uk ebay.
another name for them is small end bearing.. they are inside the piston and fit over the gudeon/piston pin and inside the top of the con rod.
its probably the small end bearing that is rattling. if it rattles really bad then replace it but they normally have a little noise in them anyway. just gets worse with wear.
can you post a vid?

I will try to make a vid, but i think my engine and exhaust will overtake the ratteling noise. Anyway thanks for the information, is gues its the best to replace them, because i'm a high rev driver and it's not that big deal to replace the small end bearing.

okay so i reved it to 5000 rpms and the rattling got worse and when lowering the idle i could hear knocking but thats how my yamaha usually runs i have seen other pre 2000 yamahas that have the same engine sound ...kinda like a diesel engine at low revs.. and i suspect that the rattling comes from a loose screw somewhere
shouldnt rattle and if it does very minimul, check for play, alot of dtrs rattle due to incorrect lubrication and people ragging the s*it out them, engines will rattle with lack of lubrication, check your haines on colour of smoke and spark too (tell tell signs)
