Any Pointers Running Terrible

Sorry to jump almost straight in with problems, but could do with some idea's on why the bike runs so rough. This Power Valve thingy which mine doesn't have either a servo or cable operation seems to spin around and around forever ?, now I am not fused about max speed but would like the bike to run as it might have done from the factory, I can twist the inner part so it looks like the indent on the cover is lined up and she will tick over fine and rev up to about 6k then that's about it, I can twist it clockwise and make her rev higher but still no where near max maybe 9k but she sounds rough as old dogs, and won't maintain rev's just keeps between say 9 and 8.
Tried without air filter as that seems well clogged up but still not much better, she starts by hand and ticks over lovely etc.
Where do I start in trying to get her running better ?, I know she waon't run as well as my ZX12 :), but was hoping to see her better than this.
Will post some pictures of the Power Valve part if that helps.
Cheers in advance.

Ok removed exhaust and can see the Power Valve, turned it so it's fully open but I am guessing that will mess up the low speeds / low rev's etc ?. Exhaust is knackered just past the flange so on the look for a replacement unit.
Anyone know what year exhausts will fit mine ?....apart from the obvious lol.

OK how can I pin it open ?, I made sure it was fully open before tighening the centre pin but not sure how you mean pin it ?. I think mine is a 1990 well the frame is but guy i got it from stuck another engine in so not 100% sure what year it is from, any way of telling numbers etc ?. As a stock bike where would the valve be set ?, did Yamaha actually sell a bike with crap low end or crap top end as standard, 2 friends had these bikes way back in the 80's but all I remember is they were good for wheelies cannot remember them saying about crap below 6k ?.
Crazy if you have an exhaust for sale would be very interested as long it's OK for my bike (89-03) and good condition etc, any more details on it ?.

can you see the pokey out bit on the black plastic bit, and the hole in the metal behind it?
put something thats a good fit through both the holes so that it locks in place, 4mm drill bit works well smile.gif

Mine must have some bits missing as it don't look like that don't forget mine doesn't have any cables just a little cap over with 1 x 6mm bolt through the middle, to remove I undo this bolt then the 2 screws and the cover pulls out leaving the valve showing, this is in 2 parts neither of which seem to want to come out :). Will take a picture tomorrow as it's getting late now.

Update: found a guy who has a power valve servo and cables etc for sale, hopefully I can get these and bolt on some better running. Dropped tank off and checked for the 2 wire plug with a brown and black wire present and the single bullet connector which is good news.
Will post back if and when they arrive just need to make sure his server unit has the same 3 wres etc. Fitted some Renthal bars today which came with 1 of the other bikes I was given.
Just getting the exhaust temporary repaired till I find a decent second hand stock / after market system.

Doh, the guy rang me today about the servo he has, but after chatting to him and checking others on ebay they all seem to have 4 wires going to them + the 1 loose as shown below. Checking under the tank and reading the 1988 workshop manual they only make reference to 2 wires + 1 loose cannot see any more wires floating around for the servo ?. Did they make 2 types of servo units a 3 wire and 5 wire ?.
Would anyone have any idea what the other 2 wires do and can they be wired into my bikes electrics ?.
