Not opened my bike up properly for a while as there isn't anywhere that i can on the way to work, but today when i went to get fuel i felt like giving it some biggrin so on the way back i went the long way home even though it was freezingaww (mums car read 0C just before i went).  So i opened it up flew past a few cars and then i realised i've lost 5mph off my top enddisbelief. I reckon that means it needs new rings in, anybody got any other ideas on what it could be? Cos i use the bike everyday to get to work so it will really **** me up if i have to strip the engine hmm and if i do have to strip it and for what ever reason it takes more that a day it means i will have to push bike to work and i can't be ****ed with that lol.

What's your norm' top end ? What did it drop to ?

Cold air normally means more HP / torque not less ..

But damp air ??? could drop top end > Dunno ?

Plug might be oily ... petrol might be $hite .. exhaust might need de-coke ??

So cold today, it might be having a carb icing moment ?????

Top end might be coked up from recent pootlin round [prob burn off, next time you hammer it ??]

You can't strip it on 5mph evidence m8 !

Miles on this top end so far ??

If it were rings .. you would notice drop in acceleration, more than 5 mph top end !

Give it a chance ... next time out !

Or if your really concerned, whack compression tester on it ...

it was hitting 75mph easy and almost hitting 80mph at times now it struggles to hit 70mph

my bike was covered over so it shouldn't be iced up it wasn't too cold her yesterday

as for miles on top end as far as i know it hasn't been rebuilt at all and its on 15'000 getting towards 16'000

Tryin to source a compression tester to use today...

You know when you spray an aerosol spray, even i summer .. like letting off with a full can of silicone spray all over the bikes metal bits after you've washed it wink ..

... and the end of the spray tip ices up ? Freezes your pinkies .. yea ?

That's how Air Con / chiller units work .. the atomisation of the liquid as it sprays steals all the heat from the air / tip around it ...

Air gets sucked through your carb, then as your petrol comes out of your jets it atomises .. This can steal all the heat from the tip of the jet .. which can then start to form frosty lumps on the end, which then f*cks up the flow & spray pattern ..
Makes bike run like a dog !
Can happen in summer, but winter cold air makes it worse !

Old skool Kawasaki's used to be bad for it .. a fuel additive was the only way to stop it happening in winter ..

So covering / storing the bike in the warm, wont solve it ..

Just chucking some ideas at you ... Unlikely to be this on your DT to be honest, as later 04 on have a warm water circuit flowing through the carb to stop this happening ..

I don't know if earlier ones did ?? I suspect they have ??

Yea ..

Try comp' tester ...

16 K .. ? !  Might be time for a deek into top end ?

But wouldn't start stripping it, till you've tried it on another day etc etc ..

yeh defo try a comp tester like sy says, yeh all years have 2 rubber tubes that come from the cylinder head and circulate through the carb stopping carb iceing, also might be worth checking your powervalve is set up properly on the pullys as the cable stretch after time, if you have been ragging the bike it may well be the piston and rings but might not

little question, have you changed your chain and sprockets since you last got 80 out your bike? larger rear sprocket or shorter front will cause this too smile.gif

W.

almost hit 80 when good ??

Sounds like Cdi is resrticted on yours ???

[see other thread in Ebay Sales of all places !]

But ..

Try this one for size ...

Don't know what model year you are .. But ...

If yours has the reed switch 'Speed Restrictor' in the back of the speedo ...

and its taken away from the speedo & taped up ...

But ..

It's fallen back near the speedo gubbins ?

Then it would be performing about how you say !

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
