i was just driving my bike and suddenly there was a loud clunky noise and the bike came to a halt. sounded like inside the engine, i then tried to kick start it and the noise did not sound right... the piston still hit the top of the cylinder but the noise sounded like something was cracked please help, this is my first bike and don't know what to do, might just take it to local yammy store but they over charge like a bunch of ****s

HMMMMM?

was it running okay?
when was it last rebuilt? how many miles?
2 stroke topped up?

how confident are you with engine work?

if its running like **** and sounds horrible, its worth taking the exhaust off, have a look with a torch up the exhaust port, if the powervalve is in the way turn the ignition on and off, keep your fingers out the hole haha, move the kick start over slow (make sure ignition is off) and try and look at the condition of the piston. If it has scratches on your gonna have to rebuild the top end.

Sounds like your engine seized to me. I would do as craig says take your zorst off look up at piston (if you cant see it slowly kick the engine over) make sure that there are 2 rings on the piston, no scratches on the piston. If all looks ok it could be possible that the bottom end has partially seized. Got oil in the crank case?

it has 6600 miles had not had a rebuilt yet, I think it is about time.
it has run like a dreeaaaaammmm for the past 10 months, i have 2 stroke oil in it completely full. I'm pretty sure its a top end problem, i have a haynes manual so I'm going to do what you suggested graig. I dont think its seized as the piston still moves. I'm not that confident with engine work but i have freinds and family who are so im going to take it slowly today and try and find what the problem is. If i get stuck or confused I will take photo ect and post on here... thanks for the help everyone

craig you were right... the piston had broken (found pieces in my expansion chamber LOL) i've taken off the carb and whole top end piston is out, and parts are getting order tomorrow soo we rebuild next sunday well here are the photos of the days events, the wire photos are just so i can remember which go where. its the first time I have ever done engine work as im still 17 lol but all went well a few hick-ups but done now...

the local yammy store are charging me £470 for piston head, cylinder head and shaft and new power valve as the bolt going through my pully had disapeared. Is this okay, can i get cheaper? thanks people.

how the HELL did you do that!!!!!

...

what have you bought for £470?
descent piston kit around £40
get the head skimmed at any engineering place
get the cylinder rebored (make sure you buy the piston after so its measured for the cylinder)
genuine gaskets
all that cost me £110

then the powervalve.. hmmm, take the powervalve out and inspect it.

dont see why thats £470, whats been ordered new?

dont know lol.
where would i get the cylinder rebored?????
and dont know any engineering places, I want to get the new stuff, I want a new top end I would like it look and feel brand new. but i know 470 is sooo high but i'm starting work soon and it would feel nice to not have to worry about the top end for a while... saying that i may have to do what you suggest, makes more senses, but it need it to be done and running in in 20 days. I'm finishing my A levels in the next 15 days so no time. would be easier to just pop to the shop pick it up and fit it.

craig I saw ur post about running in the engine but now cant find it could you give me the link.. thanks for your help mate.

www.pjme.co.uk

Ring them explain your situation and they will sort you out!! You can parcel up your cylinder and sent it to them for the rebore and they can send you back a piston kit that will be the exact size to the bore ov the cylinder.

They are well known on most forums and are brilliant, thats who i use anyway.

Its £25+VAT for the cylinder rebore
£15+VAT for the head skim
£40+VAT for the piston kit
£4.50+VAT for little end bearing

Get a top end gasket set from yammy say around £20 ( i learnt the hardway about using non genuine yamaha gaskets )!!

Then you just need to sort the power valve.

Thats the route id go down tho id be asking PJME for their advise. If i was you id ring em at PJME they are sound and easy to talk to, they will be able to tell you the best course of action.

I'll second that, they do a top class job and will supply you with a quality piston and rings and possibly gaskets. Not sure they will supply a PV you will have to ask if they can do the whole package.

What i'm not sure of though is did the apparent collision with the PV actaully damage the barrel , but perhaps you know the answer to that.

this is the odd thing ive never had a problem with the pv and when unataching the cylinder i undid the pv and there was no bolt inside not even the head... real confusing. so i need to fix that the cables are fine.
pjme sounds like best bet, i will call them on tuesday and put the order in if they dont do the pv i will buy one new from yammy store.

engine work is fun welll happy i did it myself rather than getting the shop to do. thanks for the help mateys. I will post photos when refitting

They will be able to tell you more on tuesday but i would estimate a couple of weeks coz you have got to post the parts to them and they have gotta post them back which will add 4 days or so.
