ok so i brought home a tdr 125 last week, 2003 got it home and noticed poor running, exhause was taped up with foil didnt notice that when i was getting it so next time i cant keep a good idle, idle mix screw is wrung to **** in the carb and no way of getting it out, new(used) carb, things running a lot smoother now but still not holding idle, i look in the rad and its all oily as ****
so i took off the top end today only to find my piston and barrel scored as ****, learn from the local mechanic that its nikasil and needs resleeving or recoating, **** so im looking in breakers on the off chance that i find a cheap top end and ebay
I have come accross a 3mb piston, head and barrel for 80 pounds and another piston and barrel but i dont know the prefix for 60.
so basically i am wondering is there a list of all the different top ends and what they are made of and power outputs and if i cannot find the 4fu will a 3mb one drive the tdr 2003 gearing?
well i mwas going to ring him later to confirm it would all match up with my motor, the local breakers wants 200 for a tdr topend which i dont even know the prefix on so ive got half a mind to just put the 3mb on it for cheap and let it on again now t#hat nearly everything wrong has been righted on the bike
hmm plated barrel !had a bike shop near me try that one ,sayin special liner ... barrels bein rebored so dont think they knew wot they were on abt or just as likely didnt wanna take on the job as it was a very posh bike shop dealin in top end bike dukes etc
Should be easy enough to see if it's a nikasil bore or not. If it is nikasil, it would only cost about £100 to have it replated + £20-50 if it needs any major welding done (to cover chips/scrapes)
Theres a company online called apticote that do it for a reasonable price...
Or, you could have your barrel machined out and have the liner fitted (like dtr barrel) which is usually slightly cheaper but not as good as the nikasil...
My advice would be to get yours replated... If it is indeed a nikasil bore :)
it is a 4fu i have, the local breakers have a replacement for me for 130 euros (about 103 pounds) another 4fu, what would the best course of action be? ill probabaly have to post it if i am getting a rebore and it might end up cheaper getting the one from the breakers rather than gettinh rebored

Rather the devil you know... There must be an engineering company close to you ? Which would save getting it posted. Do you know yet if it's nikasil or lined ? EDIT: Quick look through google tells me the 4fu is definately nikasil...
If your going to buy another from a breakers you really need to see it yourself, otherwise you may end up needing that replated aswell...
My previous advise imo would be the best choice = Get yours repaired... Getting a nikasil bore repaired and re plated is really no big deal and will no doubt end up the cheapest option in the long run...
theres a few engineering places local but i dont know if they do that sort of thing or not, none the less i will check in the morning, according to the guy in the breakers there are no marks on the barrl but a stain on it from some sort of fluid, i wont buy it without getting a good look anyway
can do tomorrow, a search of irish biker forums has revealed the worst however in that there is nowhere in ireland that does nikasil coating
i can tell you now though that the scoring is pretty deep in it and the piston was even worse, 1 score a lone on the piston wouldve been somewhere in the area of 2mm accross and 1mm deep

have the cylinder infront of me now, heavy scoring on the exhaust and intake sides bit of a gouge on the intake side, half of one of the piston ring stop pins is missing but it it like it disintegrated rather than came off in 1 piece so im guessing this could have largely contributed to the failure, that said my bottom end is feeling pretty ok still and there is no play in the crank. and since i have driven over 120 miles before pulling the bike apart i am guessing it disintegrated and was flushed out of the exhaust port before it could get into the bottom end.
couldnt take pictures tonight as i have a **** camera that cannot handle the dark well.

Is posting it to the uk really that big a deal ? It'll be done properly to the right specs and be as good as new...
Where as the one from breakers has already had X amount of miles clocked up so you have no idea how much longer it's gonna last!
Here's a pic of my old nikasil bore :
It was worse than it looks. If you look on the nikasil websites they show pics of the before damage which usually looks pretty terminal, but turn out to be quite an easy fix...
been onto a few places in the uk, going to cost me about 140 for it if it doesnt need welding and will take over 2 weeks, im going to see the breakers one and then if its ****e ill go down the recoat route
the topend today was in very good shape and the guy threw in the head for nothing so i was happy enough to take it and will put the spare one on ebay when im done with it, so now its piston time, where can i source a decent piston like a mitaka and gaskets and small end bearing, pjme should have one for me but they havent given me a price on postage yet so im prepared to look at a few other sites too,
local wants 90 euros for a prox piston kit and another 15 for a bearing so a bit pricy but he can get it next day
edit: just checked and pjme want 20 pound for delivery making the local route the same price with everything added up.

wouldnt get a race piston. they are lighter so you go faster but they wear out quicker but then its a race piston so your meant to replace it ever X amount of hours not 10k miles.. You can get half decent paterns matika or something for £40 tops or go genuine for like £90 inc rings.. small end bearings are £7 or so and usually they are the same make as the the yam ones..
I can testify to the gen pistons. I bought my bike at 4k miles. I seriously doubt it was rebored. Ive done over 33k on it now and it is still going with original bore, piston and rings. still has compression and still pulls.. these newer DT's are way more reliable than the older ones... unless I dont rag mine enough? maybe but at one point I was doing 30 miles a day at 65mph for over a year...

ordered locally after weighing up the prices(and the fact i work in the shop), mitaka piston came in the end and i paid 70 euro for it and a set of pattern gaskets working ouit around the same price as internet when you convert it and factor in shipping
dont use pattern gaskets you will regret it. casing ones aint so bad but for a topend go genuine.. trust me. a gen head gasket is only £13 or semething... use pattern on the headgasket and you will end up pulling the top end apart again in 1000 miles..

in a plated barrel i would get the best piston you can aford wossner forged pistons are about 80 quid and well worth it i put a genuwin yamaha piston in mt dt after the barrel had done 3000 miles it broke up 1700 later imo mitaka pistons are stronger than genuwin yamaha dt pistons and will last alot longer
not sure robin, whats it worth to you? be nice to recoup some of the lost cash, and would my old carb interest you? idle mix screw is seized and then stripped by previous owner, im sure you would get it out with enough detirmination though
