OK since I have bough the bike I haven't got a chance to ride it, been working everyday etc. So it's just been sitting covered out the back of the house. A good thing too, as I noticed it is leaking oil, just a small amount over the period of 3 days so far.
The oil is black, so I'm assuming it's 2 stroke / engine oil thats leaking somewhere. I'm off again on thursday so will try and see where it is coming from.
Q1. Are there any common oil leak problems with the DT125?
Q2. Am I right in assuming that the 2 stroke oil is used as engine oil as well as being used to mix with the fuel? Also is it possible to drain the 2 stroke oil? I want to add my own, not sure what the guy before was using..
Also a good thing I didnt take the bike out yet as I noticed the (transmission?) oil is low. I'm guessing its the transmission oil as it's the oil thats not the 2 stroke oil! haha... Yeah I don't know anything about bikes.
Q3. Should I just top up this oil? I read in the book it takes 10w30 ... or should I do a full change?
I also noticed two open ended plastic pipes, like over flow pipes? Can anyone tell me what they are for?
Change the full gear oil because you have to put in a measured amount.. you dont know how much is in there at the minute. Also its routine maintenance and you dont know when it was last changed.
The oil leak could be coming from a burst gasket.. same happened to me in the first week of me owning the bike! If you havent got a mechanic background then it would be worth taking it to a garage to sort. Shouldnt cost too much.
It needs to be fixed or you might damage the gears.
The overflow pipes are breather pipes from the carb i think, they are meant to be there just leave them be
Change the gear oil, might be knackered/not enough in there/could even be the wrong oil altogether..
Anyways to do that: Warm the bike up and then feel the right side casing, if it's warm then go to then next step, if not carry on revving the bike until it does get warm, Get a jug or a container, a funnel would also be helpful in preventing spills, Undo the 12mm bolt at the bottom of the side casing and catch all the oil, Tip the bike over to get even more oil out of it, When no more is coming out put the 12mm bolt back in as tight as it was before, Open the oil cap (black plastic thing on top of casing) and pour 750ml of oil in there, I think the haynes says to use 10: 40, but i always use putoline sae 75 or 80. It should be about £8 for a litre of the stuff.
To change the 2 stroke oil (The stuff that gets burnt with the petrol, usually red): There is a bottle at the back left of the bike with a pipe coming out of it and going down to the right side casing, Disconnect the pipe at the bottle side first and catch all the oil, Open up the 2 stroke pump housing (Right side casing 4 screws holding a squareish box), Take off the biggest pipe and catch all the oil whats coming out of it, When you dont think there is any more, blow down it and get the rest out, Put the pipe back on the 2 stroke bottle side and fill it up the bottle with the good $hit, Then wait for it to come through the pipe at the pump side so there isn't any air locks in the pipe, Connect the pipe back up to the pump, Put the door back on the casing and you're away
