34 Carb - Air Filter
Permalink

Hi, basically I've got myself a 34mm mikuni carb of an RGV afaik, fitted it using a slightly bodged rs manifold, bit rough round the edges but it does the job. Trouble I'm having is where and how to fit an air filter. I've got a little cone filter that I had to chop down because there's no space between the carb and the shock and I think it's strangling the power a bit. Just wondering as it must have been done before, how did you go about fitting the filter, was thinking of using some sort of tubing and putting a bigger cone filter on the end. Ideas?

Cheers

is that one of the downdraft carb 34mm's? i've got a pair of them and been eyeing up fitting one,  can't help as yet with the air filter, if you've got a piccy of the manifold i may be able to catch up and muck in though
cheers

I'll get a pic up tommorrow, I'm considering using some flexible tubing and just sticking a cone filter on the end, got a cut down one on atm and it's fine for a while but as soon as it get a little dirty or wet it chokes the engine.

i bet! if you can get some flexi tube to get it out of the way, perhaps like turbo pipe off a car or something just to get it  up high outta the way

This is the only picture I took that didn't come out blured lol

I'm a bit concerned about the jetting though, without the air filter it runs about right with a 150 main jet but will run way too rich with the filter on. I'm not sure if it's just the filter not letting in enough air or I just need to go down to maybe a 140? I know my rs had a 155 with a 34 carb, just seems a little low. Can't really see the manifold in the pic, probably be better to use a tzr manifold and bore that out by 2mm tbh, just had that sitting about lol. Did clean the little filter out I had fitted to it and put it back on, still choking the engine, strange that it was running fine last weekend, maybe it was just loose or something.

is the rs manifold angled for a downdraft carb, see what you mean about that being tight, you can get k&n pan filters that are wider but don't pertrude out so far

You need to find an angled inlet manifold as the straight one is no good - try something like a Cagiva Super City or an Aprilia MX 125 etc. Ideally you want a Yamaha / Minarelli one as it would fit straight on - maybe see if you can get a WR200 / DT200WR one as they 'may' use a bigger sized carb I cant remember....

Thats a good idea if you can get the rubber connector tube in the right sizes.

Seems to work well with 140 main even with the small filter. Not sure what it revs to as I've got no rev counter but deffo a big improvement over the standard 28. 2nd gear wheelies are fun lol :D

I've seen the manifold on a WR200 which is a 30mm carb so maybe that would be a good one to try?

Maybe if I could find one. Thing is it works OK but as soon as it gets a little wet or muddy it just clogs the filter up. Put the mudguard/airbox back on anyway so should at least stop that happening. Might see if I can make up a custom one somehow and wack a massive filter on it lol.

Hey People, Have you tried taken the snorkel off, Under the seat? Sound a lot deeper and not so tinny. also feels a little more pokeyer but nothing changes on my top end. I got like 70 out of it and if they do 62mph while restricted and only 70 odd whne added Pipe or cut a wire then is it really worth it?. Ive only started looking at doing things coz i got showed up at the lights by some 125 road bike. what id love to know is how can the RS125 do about 110mph when its the same 125 single pot? but yet the DTR125 dose only 70 maybe 80 max.

RS does around 95 as it's higher tuned and it's more aerodynamic. With a bigger carb you should be able to keep up with an rs up to around 50 or so.

The RS125 has a much more tuned Rotax engine which is designed to produce more power at the expense of shorter piston / ring changes etc.

Plus a road bike as PH said will have a major aerodynamic advantage over you sat bolt upright like a sail.
