Oil Leak

Ok where to start, long story!

Bought my DT back in september for £1700 from a dealer,  paid abit over the odds but it was standard and only 9k miles on it and ran very well.

Had it for around a week and decided to change all the fluids so I know its been done, drained the oil was clean so was a waste of time anyway but oh well, as i'm putting the drain bolt back in SNAP (****) knew it was bad as soon as i felt it crack, bolt pulls out and half of it is sitting between the crankcases as this bolt runs through the two.

So i take the clutch cover off and it has snapped on a dirty angle, had a go at drilling it out with no luck at all just bouncing off the mark and making a mess really. So I put the engine back together now i've got a drain hole with nothing filling it, so I plug it with a bolt for the time being and its held up fine.

A few weeks back I took it into a dealer and they quoted me around 1.5-2 hours labour 75-100 quid, bargain you think? wrong. ended up forking out £75 and being told the leak was fixed, wasnt fixed at all, he failed to drill it out and just tiddied up the drain plug and filled it with a sillocone of somekind, cant rememeber the name. They have told me to completely get this bolt out its going to require a full rebuild on the botton end.

So for the past few months i've been riding it with this leak, its not a major leak at all it just drips every now and then, red hot and you could watch it for 10 minutes with no activity but when i park it outside work i can see that its definately leaking, so I just keep an eye on the window and top it up every now and then.

Plan on doing my mod 2 pay day and selling the bike, i'm an honest person so i will be telling the buyer of course but how much is this going to affect the value?

Depends on the buyer mate, if it was me I'd want quite a bit off since i'll have to potentially rebuild the bottom end and fix the twisted bolt. Hopefully it hasnt done any more damage but you'll only know that if you open it up.

Question is how much are you willing to lose over this unfixed? You could start to fix it then find out it's more damage than you thught, get annoyed and then have a bike with engine in bits for sale.

The shop where I took it to be fixed offered me 800 for it, found that quite insulting but i'd probably take 1300 knowing the problem etc.

I'm 99% sure it hasnt caused any damage it's just wedged inbetween the crankcases, the oil leak comes from the clutch cover cause it cant pull it fully where it needs to.
But if I get **** offers for it i'd prefer to keep it as a back up bike/off road type since i'm going for an SM next.

Theres not many for sale from what I can see, only 2 on auto trader within 60 miles, both DTRE's though. Probably a good time to sell.

Same happened to me when i was doing my kick start conversion (to my RE), long story short i broke my original clutch because i was pure idle in the fact i couldn't be bothered to read my haynes..

Anyways when i finally did get everything spot on again this bolt snapped, what i did was get a hammer and a flat bladed screwdriver, hammered a thread into the top of it and unscrewed it. Baring in mind i already had a tiny bit of thread sticking out so i knew if i hammered at it, it wasn't gonna go into the engine.

If you do do anything as daft as me then it's completely up to you, i hold no responsibility lol.

And price wise i would never go on offers of what the dealers are offering, they're in it to make money so won't be wanting to take a risk at losing money so will offer you well under the odds so they can't really lose.

I'm gonna wait to see some more auctions go on eBay to see how much mine should be worth once I've cleaned it up.. Then probably sell it..

And I thought I was the only one with bad luck lol.......

Assuming you have access to an electric drill and a few other bits and pieces this is what to do.

Beg/borrow/steal (buy if you have to) a couple of drill bits. One about 1.5mm - 2mm, the other about 6mm. Must be sharp. With the smallest, try and start drilling a hole in the centre of what is left of the bolt - not easy if it hasnt broken off square. Slow speed and dont push hard. Once youve got a hole a feww mm deep, open it up with the larger drill. Go in about 15mm. Now you need a tool called a screw extractor which is in the pciture below. A set is about a tenner. If you can borrow, all the better. Pick the one that will just go in the hole and screw it in - its left handed so it will be like youre undoing it. As its tapered it will get tighter in the hole youve drilled and should eventually undo the bolt. Dont overdo it as if that breaks you will be in deeper sh*t than you were before as they are too hard to drill out. Good luck if you have a go at this. Get in touch if you have any questions. If you live in the Yeovil neck of the woods I can help you with the tools.

I have tried this, I have the exact set you pictured haha. I might have another crack before I sell it, whats the worst that can happen, its already messed up lol.

The tough part is its quite deep into the engine so its hard to drill into / work on as with small drill bits they arent long enough to reach it.
