Aww ouch , good luck with the rebuild m8 , u gettin the 170 kit? I'd go for a new crank aswell if I wer u m8, last thing u wanna do is destroy a 400 quid barrel n piston for the sake of another 100 odd quid lol

Note to self: VISUALY check 2t oil regulary lol

Best advice I'll give is make sure that all gasket surfaces are nice, flat and clean, and make sure you put everything back exactly where you found it!

As long as you are mechanically minded, you'll soon find doing a full rebuild including a bottom end, really isn't that hard :)

i've got a friend who can re-bore my barrel, but dosen't know the measurments or w/e (he's never done a bike, just has equipment) does anyone know what info he needs and the diameters etc? atm i've got a 56.50 piston in and will need to size up from that, cheers

I don't know off the top of my head if these cylinders have a Nikasil bore (I presume they do, most modern 2-stroked do) but it won't just be a case of boring the cylinder out, you'll need to get it re-plated if you do, and boring the cylinder out may mess around with your port timing slightly as well... Just to make you aware of what you are taking on board here fella!

Dt's don't have nikasil Plated barrel they have the steel inserts, boring out will be fine and won't affect porting , u will need to go to the dia of the piston u have for it BUT check in the manual for cylinder tolerances , u might have to go a fraction bigger than ur piston like 56.52 or summink like that

They are sleeved? I'm a little surprised actually.. would have thought yamaha would have plated the cylinders :S

Well fudge! Nikasil plated cylinders are more reliable in my experience and have an exponentially lower wear rate than sleeves, but sleeves are cool, I can deal with that :)

I wouldnt let anyone except a specialist re-bore a 2 stroke, as it is much more tricky than a 4 stroke. However, if your friend:

* knows which way round to bore it (top down or base up)

* has a proper boring machine

* can bore it to 56.45 / 56.55mm

* can measure to within 10 microns

* Has a hone with the right grit size

* knows how to chamfer the ports after honing

then he is the man for the job. Otherwise let a specialist do it. Should cost about £25 - £30 and be money well spent. Hope this helps
