Hey I'm Tom, this is my first post on here...Lil nervous...hahaha.
I have a 1991 DT125R which I have been using as an MX bike (So no lights, clocks etc) Having left a running bike for a couple of months it now will not run. The problem is this:
The plug will only spark when I kick it over and wont continue to spark even when I try to bump start it. When I kick it over it does fire breifly, but just wont run. I have checked a wiring diagram and as far as I can see everything is as it should be. I tryed using a different coil/HT lead/plug cap off my brothers bike which is running fine. I've tryed a new plug and checked the fuellling, but still no joy. Could this be a problem with CDI unit??
If anyone has any idea what this might be or has experienced this before or can provide a diagram of how they've wired up there DTR's that would be great, because I'm in quite a pickle :(
Now then, I'm no garage mechanic, and I'm only replying to your post coz you sound pretty desperate, and I see no one else has replied, so if I were you I'd check the wires around the magneto, pick up etc, as in the past whilst sorting out my lads bikes, I've found that if the CDI is buggered you'll not get any kind of spark weak or no, you say you ride/ rode it totally off road, then theres a big chance you could have chafed a wire or got some c rap into where the pick up is. Especially as you' sound like you've tried all else. Just my ten penneth worth, no doubt somebody else may have a better solution, but till then try mine!
Btw, you may get more replies if you announce yourself as a newbie in the appropiate section mate, alot of people come on here with a problem, post once, get the solution to their problem, then bugger off never to be seen again.

I'll tell you why that is ...
lots of people join, dont bother to introduce themselves and just right away start threads asking for help. 9/10 they get their answer and leave without even a thanks.
I dont blame people for getting a little tired of it. Not saying that's the OP's intention but this is a community that CAN help, not a help centre that likes to act like a community.
Thank you very much for your reply. Your right, I wont lie to you, I am a desperate man haha.
Your info on the CDI unit helps me a bit after getting a quote from my local Yamaha dealer of £297 odd for a new CDI unit from them!!! I will defo have a look at the magneto etc.
Sorry if I didn't go about this the right way, I had no idea of the proper etiquette etc. I really appreciate any help I can get and have no intention of getting answers and just running off. Ive got no problem helping other people out in any way I can. I understand why you guys would get frustrated.
Lol, think this forum is tough on etiquette, you wanna try the Lexus Owners Club forum mate, you have to button up your shirt collar and wear a tie, every time that you post in there lol
Yea man I might be a like i wanna answer here and now lol. But truth is we all have to wait for that.. I love this site, People are helpful and friendly. Gutted about my Heap of POO though! maybe i should have highered one of you guys to come and fix my bike. lol.
Your right, this is a nice little online community here, Im new to the whole forum thing and didnt realise what a good resource it is. But I may have a result on the advice given by nev!! I just took apart the magneto. The casing is a bit smashed up as many I have seen are; and sure enough the inside was full of mud and god knows what else has been festering in there since 1991, all covering the sensors. Im in the process of cleaning it all up now. Fingers crossed :D
Damn, still no luck, the bloody thing just wont fire!!! The plug still only sparks when kicked and then its like it dies and just wont keep going. Damn...
Yep, it fires and starts for like a second and then just doesnt keep going, I can see it when the plugs out aswell, it only sparks like 3-4 times and then dies.
Yeah thanks darren I will give that a go. I have not messed around with the wiring atall, but theoretically the last thing it can be is something loacated around the CDI unit. Its nice to know someone else has had this problem before, I thought I was just going mad lol
OK...I have the electrics sorted!!! After fiddling about with the loom a bit, it now has a healthy spark, I just need to clean the carb out etc and get the fuelling right and should be away hopefully...

Good to hear you got it sorted Tom, a little pointer when cleaning your carb is that the petrol intake spigot has a filter slipped into it so make sure you clean this too, as most people take the piping from the petrol tap, leaving the 8" or so piping left on the carb never realising that theres a filter on the other end, your carb may or may not have this filter, but best to check, especially as you off road.
Hey guys, Sorry its been a while, my bike all sweet now and running beautifully!! Thanks again Nev for all your advice with the carb, followed them to the letter and it all worked brilliantly!! So happy it all works now, I cannot tell you!!!
