First thing when buying a standard dtr125?

I'm buying a 2002 bog standard dtr125 sometime this week.

i was wondering what peoples suggestions would be as the first things to do to the dt to make it quicker/run better/sound better ect, starting with easyest & less expensive method first.

am interested to see what options i have..

tape the clock restrictor up then get your pipe gutted and get a dep end can sorted XD

When you take the seat off you'll see the airbox, with the black curved snorkle attached to it. Just simply yoink it out, job done. If your not happy with it, you can simply slot it back in.

oh rightyo... will do that then :) thanks for explaining...

doubt i will gutt the front pup because i think my friend had that done and where he had welded it all back up it looked awful.
also yeah will do something with clock restrictions, cheers guys!

congrads you have chosen the best bike

new plug, airfilter, oil, 99 octance fuel,

give it a major degreese and clean

buy a haynes manuel and take off all the fairing to get a good look at the bike

ha...the best bike :D!!

yeah a good clean is deffinatly in order, few weeks before i can get insured anyway so have plenty of time!
will post pictures when i get it :).

will do the things you've said, the 99 octane fuel just to run through the engine once to give it a clean out??

Your best bet is to go to an industrial estate type place, where they do metal welding etc. They will be able to do you a great job at a cheap cost, it's worth the money you pay though because otherwise it's just another set back. Also, the highest octane fuel is always the best to go for, as it's obviously the best quality, thus giving you more performance. Personally i don't always go for it, as i'm a tight git at times, but you can tell the difference between having a full tank of high octane compared with bog standard unleaded for sure. smile

imo if you can afford to fork out for a full dep system i would, i never messed around cutting my exhaust up and my uncle is a welder as well! Because when i took my standard exhaust off it weigh's so much more than a dep does and look's horrible and imo is a bit of a bodge job.hmm

The dep exhaust is the best thing i have ever done to my dt, sound's amazing, look's amazing, weigh's very little, add's load of performance (when set up correctly i.e up-jetted to suit), they are chrome so don't rust easily, come with NO restriction's!wink

And for the cheapest mod to make it quicker do the clock restriction thing, and depending on what you want (acceleration or top end) change you front sprocket cost me £5 to go down 1 tooth and it add's load's more bottom end and still does 80-85 mph smile

im thinking....

remove all restrictions, mod manifold...decent reeds, full dep pipe. mess about with gearing. mess about with powervalve & get it all running tickety boo.

and then once i have a bit more money, probs send off to stan stephens for a stage 3 tune up :D (Y)!

would the 3mb head just fit straight on and is it worth doing that if im getting stage 3 tuning?, isn't there a 3mb cylinder aswell? ...that worth getting, and where did u get your 3mb cylinder head from?

also, completely off this subject, that rear fender you have on your dt is that just a dunlop sticker on the side or a full graphic? where did u get it?

yes straight fit, worth getting added 12psi to my bike dont know much about the 3mb barrel except its nikasil plated also the a 4fu barrel from the tzr thats higher performance, got mine on ebay

also search for tdr, sc125, gpr125 2 stroke, and tzr head,

the 3mbs where on 88-91 then on the RE and X

look on ebay

the graphics are a kit from DD graphics

but my bike undergoing a massive secret prodject should be ready in a weekbiggrin

going to buy that head this weekend & also keep an eye out for a cylinder & then picking my bike up monday :)!

I have been running no snorkal for 3 years and have never blown my bike up once and 19000 miles on the clock????

The hole in the top of the airbox does not change in size just cause you remove the snorkal so the same amount of airs getting sucked through weather its on or not?????

Of course the hole changes in size, if the snorkel is in, there is usually a bloody great piece of rubber wedged in the hole making it smaller, so yes it will be sucking more air in.

I'm just going with past experience, where an engine has been knackered due to the fact the bike was running lean, because the snorkel had been removed. I'm not talking out of my arse for sh*ts and giggles.

And considering the guy plans to do other mods, up-jetting to suit is required anyway, that's pretty much what I was trying to convey.

If you ask a motorcycle mechanic whether removing the snorkel from an airbox would require compensating for the extra air by fitting a larger carb jet... The answer would be yes.

If your bike has done that mileage without a snorkel for 19000 miles, it just goes to show the yammy engines are f*ckin awesome!

Also, just out of general interest, what size main jet do you run in your bike?

some come out of factory with 260 jets some come with 240 yets takeing the snorkal off makes it sound nicer in my eyes and lets in more air you just play with the air mixture skrew till it is runing nice and not boggin then your sorted

Wilksiee mate you seem to want the same set up as I have, its what I done to mine, standard exhaust (gutted) I did have a front dep pipe on aswell but sold it on here a while back, rear dep can, clock restrictor taped up, Powervalve pinned open, Racing reeds in, snorkel off, 240 jet in aswell, I sorted the inlet stub out aswell, as the person before me cut the bottom of it out, so put a normal one back in, these are the sort of mods I have done on my bike, and I a pissing over my other mates on there 125's but as I am still learning, I hope people are cool with the set up I have, but if your not please do get me some advice

Well my bikes running a gutted stock pipe no speedo restiction and snorkal off with 19000 miles on it 15000 of which with no snorkal and the mixtures been fine on my bike im sure if it was running so lean it would of blown up at some point???

 dont have to even rejet just move the jet needle up
