Dtr 125, freely revving in neutral in 1st bug spluttering in 2nd!

Hey wise people of the forum, I have been hovering for a while now, reading posts and having a look at some of the crazily nice DT's on here and I finally took the plunge and made an account! Basically, I bought my dt a month ago (more on that in my intro post which I will link later on) and I bought it as a poor runner. Got it running right and ticking over fine etc after ages of mucking about/new carb/ new manifold gaskets/new plug etc, and it now revs nicely and freely in neutral. took It for a ride up the road, and in first it revved right up to the max, changed it up into second and it revved up until about 5000 (no rev counter as of yet) then it starts coughing, spluttering and misfiring. I've been trying to figure this out for a week now, and have no idea what it is. The strange thing is that down hill it revs completely freely in 1st 2nd and all the other gears but on flat or uphill it won't rev past 5000 ish. Clearly the bike won't rev when it encounters resistance, does anyone know what would be causing this? Thanks, Greg!

Cheers for the comment mate, the thing is if it was jetting I would have expected it to do it in every gear? I suppose it's worth trying a bigger jet just to make sure, will do it tonight. Also gunna pin my pv open to see if that changes it (have a feeling it may not be operating properly!) If anything else comes to mind whack it up on here ;) cheers mate!

Do you know what the compression is like?  It could still be do with jetting and mixture too as the load on the engine is much more in 2nd gear than it is in first so problem might not show itself in first.  What is the airbox induction side like.  Is it standard airbox and filter, clean filter, no holes in airbox, snorkel still present, boost bottle thing there or not there?  I'd check from the carb back again.  Mine was a bit spluttery where the little boost bottle in the airbox -to-carb rubber was removed and replaced with a little breather covered with mesh.  It was getting too much air, blocked this hole up and now it revs through - no splutters.

Hi m8 could be conpression like kal said ie worn rings / scored barral borrow or buy a engine compression tester pretty cheap on ebay and always comes in handy
Or the exhuast could be carbond up comon on the stock one, isit a standard exhuast?
Also sounds abit like lack of fuel maybe the carb isnt setup or clean? check float level and ensure the float level jet is clean and the stop valve on the float isnt worn (check for a ridge around where it seats) is the carb new or used that you got have you striped and cleand it properly (use carb cleaner and a fin straw to blow out all the passages a air compressor is best but must people dont have access to one (do not use fin bits of wire as you could damage the passages)

Tet us know what cures it

I'm in Kent mate so not too far from you (near Dover).  I've been looking into green laning in Kent and Sussex so I might be over your neck of the woods on the muddy byways at some stage!!
