Hey guys, so i've got a 2005 DTRE that's eating the petrol up, someone's tampered with the carb previously and it's running rich etc but the ****ing screw is absolutely knackered.
What's the best way to go about fixing this? I can't go out on long rides till this is sorted cause it cost me £30 in petrol in 3 days riding :/ (about 160 miles with 2 tanks..)
I don't know what to do anyone please help or if anyone with the proper tools who can sort it out and help me tune it so it's not running super rich is local to east sussex i'd be happy to come to them :)
4 options, 1. drill out the screw down the middle with a very small drillbit hopefully the heat of drilling it will be enough to release it if not move up sizes and drill it, thread it in reverse and threadlock a bolt in there to take it out, or strip the carb, 2. heat it in the oven at about 120ºc and keep trying to see if the alloy expands exough to let you unscrew the knackered screw, 3. buy a 32 or a 34mm carb and slap it on there, will run much better and then you can start tuning other things, 4. last option and probably the most funky one get about 3 and a half a kilos of C4 and slap it around the carb in a carefully fabricated shaped charge and blow it to bits then the screw will definitley be out, wouldn reccomend it though.
Explosives eh, i like the sound of that :P Problem is though buying this bike and getting it sorted has left me extremely skint for the foreseeable future....well month or so but with it eating this much petrol i can't afford to go out riding unless it's to work :/
Worst comes to worst what carb would i need? What's the advantage to a bigger carb as well?
bigger carb = more air and fuel getting in than a smaller carb, most restriction on a bike is in the carb after the expansion chamber etc, you are not going that big though to drastically affect the motor, some modding to the connecting rubbers etc will probably need to be done to get it to fit, look for 32mm flatside carburettors. There is a koso one on ebay for 50 quid delivered, you will need to get parts with it that are mentioned in the description (oil feed pipe adaptor), if you are not into that I would try the other routes, remember to disassemble the carb and remove everything first though, you dont want to melt anything or damage anything and if you drill then dont drill too big you will ruin the carb if you do.
one thing are you talking about the idle jet screw or the mixture screw because i think that what you need to do is change the main jet size and thats pretty much it, if i remeber rightly the dt doesnt have a mixture screw for the main jet might be wrong though, can you take a pic of the screw you are talking about and show me? another thing is that the needle ight be at the wrong height.
i did say to sean he needs to find out the stock jet size and check his first, im not clued up on dt carbs so i dont know its its a mixutre or idle screw hes looking at
160 miles = 2 tanks? When I had mine I was hitting reserve at about 80 miles so sounds about right mile-wise
Price? That can't really be changed, back when I had my first DTR it was costing about £8 to fill the tank up so was £1 for 10 miles haha can't beat that unless you live at the top of the hill and roll to work or college
Jeeze I remember those days, when I had mine it was about 6 quid from reserve and 7 if i put the good stuff in, I have to say though that the most economical way to run the DT is powervalve pegged shut, lower compression, lube everything up good and away, I went from the center of North Wales to Macclesfield on mine 10 years ago after setting it up for economy/reliability google maps says 82 miles, when I got there I thought best go fill her up, two pound fifty of fuel she took (jjust under half a tank then), I felt like a right idiot walking up and paying that, just goes to show though that depending on how you have it set up depends on how they drink.
I'd rather have it set for economy but with the decent setup. best balance between power/performance really would be ideal. I'm just using it sparsly at the moment gonna save up and get Bradders's help with it and a few other things, not entirely sure the engine noise is right but then i'm a complete noob lol. 1st bike problems lol
