hi folks i rebuilt my 1998 dtr but cant get it to start, its getting spark and is firin plenty o fumes comin out exhaust, not sure wot prob is, i got a carb from ebay but the pilot screw is mashed, would this be a reason for not starting? i am lost for ideas, major stressing out about it. please help Will try any ideas you have, how the hell do you get a damaged screw out stuck on that one to
You said that it was firing and plenty of fumes. that sounds to me like its running way to rich. The air screw I think you are talking about is more of a fine adjustment for up to 1/4 throttle only. The air filter suggestion is quick and free. If its not that then take the carb off take the float bowl off and make sure there are no jets missing and that the float height is not a country mile out of position.
They are the pilot air adjustment screw and are always chewed up, mine was too but it did start and run. That really only controls the mixture at low revs and won't usually stop it starting altogether, just won't start as easy and won't run as nice at lower revs. Is it the flat slide Mikuni? Who did you buy it off on Ebay, sellers name? I bought one off Ebay, it had a chewed up pilot air screw and the inside of the carb in the float bowl was all corroded where it had water in it, the float needle etc was seized and passages all blocked, so I sent it back - I wonder if the nob has sold it again?? Either way I would suggest a full carb strip down and check & clean - if you didn't do that before fitting it. First make sure the float bowl is filling up by cracking off the drain screw at the bottom of the bowl. Have you tried a fast bump start or a tow start?

hi kalamity kid it is the flat slide mikini the boy sed goos workin order on ebay( davisbontddu) never checked carb b4 fitting i was havin probs with origonal carb i had on bike wi a mashed screw so i bot another one to adjust mysel but this ones exactly the same
hi dingle 001 I am getting exhaust gas out exhaust it fires but just wont go, a was told to bupass oil pump and use 2stroke ix in fuel tank. blocked off pipes so duzna suck air
Its difficult to establish the problem without hearing what it sounds like when it is firing and trying to go. If its really smoky then back to my original suggestion, or both mine and Calamity Kid's suggestion to strip the carb down and have a look at the inside.
cheers people will try that the mora, hoping that dont find any horrors in there, just found it weird that both origonal carb and one off ebay doing sae thing
That's a different Ebay name to who I bought my one off. What exactly was done to the bike when you rebuilt it? Are we talking piston and rings and rebore or more? Are you confident all the work done has been done right?
to check float height, you have to get the carb apart and measure, unless you have a liitle level tester - a U-tube with measurments on that you attach to the drain nipple and crack the drain screw off, the tube fills to the level of the fuel in the bowl and the marks on tube tell you if you're low or high.
But if you're confident, the engine is all as it should be and you have good compression etc, then get that carb apart and check reeds while you're there and the rubbers for splits etc.
Have you tried removing the plug, and kicking it over with a handful of throttle - do this with some rag or kitchen roll or something over the plug hole and see if it gets wet with fuel, then you'll know if fuel is getting into combustion chamber
