Main Bearings

My mains are on the way out as i can feel play in the flywheel.

my questions are how long may it last like this and what will be the end result? siezing? bearing collapsing and need a new engine near enough.

or will it plod on?

also how big a job is it to do the mains, do i need any special tools to get them off the crank?

I'm not new to taking engines apart only the fact it's watercooled and has all the crank balancer and crap, got a haynes pdf anyway.

what you guys reckon?

only thing i can help you with is that the bearing are pressed into the casings

you can get them pressed out and new ones pressed in or just buy some second hand cases

When the bearing fails it will cause your crank to fail, which will cause the top end to fail. Can work out quite expensive in the long run if ignored. Will end up having to replace bearing, crank, rebore, new piston.

You'll need a flywheel puller and clutch tool, Also bearings pressed out and in. Add new gaskets, seals etc. Not exactly a new engine but not a small job either. The longer you leave it the more chance of those parts seizing up and causing damage to others
