An abrupt stop would suggest electrics, a sluggish and spluttering would more than likely be fuel, you say about every few mins it keeps doing this? and about the same amount of time each time? I'd check the floats not sticking in the carb mate, as sounds like the bowl fills up with fuel, and you're running it down to empty each time without it filling back up as it should, also check the filter that sits inside the (fuel in) spigot on the carb, it could be full of ****e from your tank, and blocking the inlet up, has your tank been empty for a while?
Just a thought.

how olds the top end or what sort of condition is it in?
i had a kmx what did the same, piston was nakered and rings kept getting stuck in the grooves loosing compression
complete strip and rebuild check every thing then ull find out did u have a look in the engine b4 fitting it see what it was like?

only other thing it can be then is compression if sparks good and fueling right

check the head gasket / hed /cylinder warpage, crank case joint for leaks, spray some soapy water around the engine and idle it from cold if theres any leeks it will blow bubbles

could be letting coolant in when its all warmed up and has completed the heat expansion cycle

could be crank seals leaking/letting in oil

id never buy an engine off any one with out stripping it 1st, any one can say its in a1 condition, best way is to check/refurb ya self big wait off ya mind then pal

ha ha outch

if its missing a ring id be getting worried about the wear on the bottom end! all that ring been ground up and passed round the engine would of been like grinding paste, id have a good feel at the big end and see if the main bearings are rumbling at all on rotation

warm the big end up with a blow tortch not mega hot just a good warm then check for play in it, no point building a new top end on a worn out bottom or it wont last 2 mins...
