Word of advice though. Is that a big one exhaust. Best off binning that one and pay the extra for a dep. Those bigones are useless.
Other than that they look really sweet.
Big one front pipe is just going to be for setting up the engine etc, I'll get and fit a DEP when I get a chance. The big one came with the DEP back exhaust so will use it for now.
3 years is nothing - I've had my Mini project on the go for over a decade and it's never moved an inch in that time! Rome wasn't built in a day...........
What's better than one 1992 unfinished DTR project? Two 1992 unfinished DTR projects! Found this up for sale near me at a good price so couldn't resist.
Gonna learn from my mistakes made on my first DT (so far) and get this second one done up in a quicker time frame than my first one.
Still working away on my first one, hope to get it running soon, engine is all connected, just need to sort out the wiring loom and acquire a few more bits to finish.
Got it from Blairgowrie, it's in good nick for it's age - runs fine and the DEP back box is a wee bonus. Plan for this one is probably to work a bit backwards - gonna try and get the V5 sorted for it then get it MOT'd. After that strip it down, powdercoat everything, re build the engine and some fresh plastics.
Such a difference in building a bike from scratch to re-building a complete one. Just looking at this second one and I've noticed a load of bits I'm missing and it's been a help too in seeing what goes where etc.
Stripped down the second bike, have decided to use the engine and frame out of the new one to save headaches with the DVLA and also having to fanny about welding in a new rear brake pedal mount on my one. So that means another engine to rebuild and loads of spares from the first bike (frame, engine etc).
Going to try and get one bike on the road asap then decide whether to break the other one or build it up (got everything I need for two bikes apart from a few little bits)
Still working away at both bikes. Decided the blue one is too good to break so basically rebuilding it as a second project. Managed to get the V5 thru for it so started spending a bit of money on it. Got new plastics, polisport light, new crank bearings, oil seals and a load other bits. Gonna try and focus on one of the bikes now and get the white one done by xmas. Rebuilt the wheels, ordered a few replacement spokes and some white spoke guardz to finish them off. Currently rebuilding the brakes - new seals, pads and braided lines. Then it's the wiring loom, new tyres then I think that should be it. After the white one is done i'll work on the blue one. The engine will get rebuilt, everything powdercoated then SM rims with either SM forks or the set of USDs I got for it with a bit of modification. Only thing after that is to decide which one to keep and which to sell....
So this is my work space now, concentrating on the one bike.
Blue's engine waiting patiently to be rebuilt.
Wheels rebuilt, just need balanced and white spokeguardz put on then i'll get some new tyres for them.
Got a polisport headlight and front fender along with a package from Portugal including all new fairings and a seat cover.
So the blue bike is now stripped and in boxes, with the frame up the loft. Managed to get a second hand DEP front pipe that needs cleaning up and a dent removed.
Thinking that the frame, swingarm and pretty much everything black except for the tank, foot pegs, bars and maybe the brake pedal blue to match the fairings.
Wheels almost finished, replacement spokes sourced and fitted along with new disc bolts. Spokeguardz fitted, just need to order new tyres then get the wheels balanced.
Seem pretty sturdy but only time will tell, need to see how they fair once the bike is on the road. Look good and easy to fit, plus cheaper than buying a whole new set of spokes.
I know it's been a long time, but i was wondering where you found the stainless bolts? I can't for the life of me find them on ebay, the ones i did find were for the "classic" DT. As always looking forward to your next update
I got the engine ones from a seller that isn't on there anymore then other ones were just big packs of random bolts. There are some on ebay from a seller in France but are about 40 squid for the set. Might get some from pro bolt for the second bike.
Yup, they're on ebay just now but no takers, yours if you want them and can cover postage. One of them has a slight cut. Can send pictures if needs be.
very nice project u got there cant wait to see it finished , type of thing I want to do when I get 1 ( next year hopefully ) got other projects on the go at the minute plus Christmas so money is tight
keep up the good work
Minor update. Blue bike is now up the loft to concentrate on the white one. Giving myself til Christmas to get it finished. Got the tyres delivered and fitted - Continental Twinduros. Going to get them trued this coming week. Got new caliper pistons on their way along with decals from Portugal. Started rebuilding the calipers - new seals and bits. Got the brake lines through and will get them fitted soon. New brake pads as well. Probably forgetting somethings. Got two weeks off work so hopefully will get loads done on the DT.
