Running in a new piston

Do you really have to run it in for 500 miles i've had quick look online and some say 3 heat cycles and some say do not go above half throttle for 200 miles and some say just ride it as normal i,ve only done 6 miles on the new top end riding it gently its going to take ages as i only do around 20 miles a week

nope.500 miles on a brand new bike if you bought it today spanking new thats what they advise
decent brand of oil
start, blip throttle untill up at full temp
then make a short 15--30 mins ride keep the engine revving freely dont labour it like doin 30 mph in top gear
let cool for 30 mins until stone cold
check - re torque cylinder & cylinder head nuts
check for leaks /abnormal signs
good to go
main thing with any 2 stroke( always give it a nice gentle warm up before making it sing)

most damage happens not long after start up if u just ring its nek the cast sleeve bore wont expand as quick as the piston and it runs tight scouring the bore & welding alloy on to the bore surface

theres so many different ways on the net, you do what ever suits you
thats how iv always done it & never failed
