Slob's DT 125 X 2005 Restoration project ( pic heavy )

About time I got my project thread up and running after working on the bike for a couple of weeks. I bought this bike in March 2011 for £950 with 11 000 on the clock. Which I cosmetically restored and repaired a few components.

First of all I can not beleive the abuse and neglect this bike has been on the receiving end of in it's short 7 years It was even stolen and recovered. A real testiment to how durable the DT is I will let my pics do the talking!

This was the bike being tidied up just after I bought it.

And this was The bike after I was finished.

The NSR 125 was my last project. Bought her all smashed up for £350!

I ran the bike for a good 2500 miles. It ran sweet as a nut till a couple of weeks ago.......

The skirt of the piston had broke off. I must have been going about 4mph when it happened which was fortunate. The piston slap was really bad so only my self to blame. I was secretley pleased though as I could now crack on with the major over haul this poor bike needed, and which I had been planing in my mind.

The Bike looked clean from a far but it really was a dirty and rusty.

Not much explaning needing done after those pictures at the state this bikes in. 2005!!

Even the swing arm is rotted and needs to be repaired.

My plans so far is to get everything, and I mean everything powder coated! Top end rebuild. Possibly bottom end, not decided yet. full brand new Dep system, oem DT125 x red graphics.

Thanks Guys. I always stop what I am doing for a second for some pics! I really think with some effort and some well spent money. She could be a minter by spring.

When you say powdercoat everything be careful it can cost because of bits you have to renew.

Swingarm looks good but means replacing the inner collars, bearings seals etc

Yokes mean the bearing has to come off then on

Forks will have to split then new oil, seals etc

Wheels would have to rebuild

Just mentioning all this as I know it's very tempting to pull bits off and get them coated, and not realise how much it costs to put back together.

You answered some of my questions before I asked them. thats good going. The bushes and bearings are coming out the swing arm as it was seized on its pivot. The wheels are in really good condition like new.... very strange. The yokes I was not sure but the bearings were a bit rusty so they probaly have to go anyway. The forks I think I will leave for the moment, but the seals could do with being replaced but not desprate at the moment.

What are your veiws on getting for example, the suspension linkage, rear brake lever, footpegs, gear shifter. Are these worth getting coated. Or is it better to just clean these really well and spray with Hamerite.I also want to get the clutch and crank cover powdercoated.

Yup all those bits can be coated fine and stay looking good for a long time. One side of the engine is plastic so cant coat, cant remember which side lol

Also looking at your back end, i'd get that rust treated before coating. Powdercoaters generally just blast then coat, they wont sort out the rust and it'll show not long after.

I am quite lucky in th fact that the place I am getting the coating done, also deal with motorcycle frame repairs. It will cost more but it will be well worth it.

This is the place I get my work done. They are very good at what they do, and the prices are good!

Boring old black I think. I would like to do something like green or orange. But my dilema is that I want to keep the bike standard. I really like the X's with the red decals and the nice shiny DEP. They also seem to fetch a good price standard.

Thanks Wozz. I have put all the old junk nuts half into the holes as I have nice shiny Allen head replacements. The bushes and stuff are meant to be covered up by the people doing the coating as they say it's part of the service. But I will clarify that with a phonecall. Do you think it's better to remove the bearings and bushes out the arm. After or before coating. They are getting binned anyway. As for the tank I was very lucky when I got a brand new oem one with a tiny dent on it for £50. But I do have the old tank but it's badly dented.

Jesus that's some bad damage considering how new it is, shame how some (most?) people treat bikes... just run them into the ground a bit and sell them on for another one

Got my swingarm repaired at work by a black smith for peice of mind.

Got the Crankcase covers off. The water hose was so rusty I am surprised it wasnt leaking.

27429E07-F9F7-43B2-87EA-0758CB879B70-3963-0000060CDFBCB750.jpg

Just a few questions.

What would be a good stainless steel engine bolt kit for my bike be, and where can I get a nice new water pipe.

On my clutch crankcase cover how will I remove the inspection window for powdercoating.

On the same cover, would it be a good idead to bolt the waterpump cover back on prior to blasting and coating to prevent contamination of that area ect. Or will it be fine to leave it exsposed?

I am starting to flush out the crank with parafin because alluminium filings will float in it.I have decided against bottom end rebuild as I have been told the later models of DT,s are so restricted the bottom end will be fine, and from the bearings I have looked at, there is no play in them. I dont want to pull apart the engine to find there is nothing wrong with them. It wont be the end of the world if I lose a top end. I am willing to take the chance on what I have observed. I rekon the damage to the piston was simply due to running no oil from time to time, i reckon some of the previous owners only put fuel in cause they had no other choice!

From seeing the Robert Brownlies motor and 'Pentland Powder Coating', I take it you're in Edinburgh too? I used Pentland Powder Coating and was so impressed I went back and intend to go again, very reasonably priced and a great finish. See my project build thread and let me know if you need a hand or anything (not that I have a clue what I'm doing most of the time).

My plan was to sand it  down a bit with 800 grit or something like that, prior to spraying.

Slinky I have read your project before. Cant beleive I missed the Pentland powdercoating bit. Who did you get to rebore your head. And how much if you dont mind me asking

Brown motor engineers down at The Shore - speak to Tom. They did the Vauxhall engine for my mini and the barrel for the dt. For the re-bore and tidy up of the cylinder head I think it was 36 squid plus vat. Again reasonable and would recommend them.

We have used them for our machinery at work. Was going to enquire with them but thought they only dealt with heavy machinery. Nice build you have got going there. Makes me want to do something differant.

When you sent your stuff to pentland did you cover the bushes ect up. or did they do it like they say on the site. I have had two sets of alloys done by them in the past. very good finish they get.

I didn't cover the bushes, I left old seals and old bolts in - didn't want ti take any chances. Don't know if they would cover them up but thought it would save me money if I did it myself.
