hold that thought bud! the taper bearings for the top are ESSENTIAL!!!!! lol they can take one hell of a beating (off road, pot holes/kerbs) and last ages. so much better than the pooey ball bearings, one good pot hole and they're dead
Is that right mate. So I could be a boss lol and fit some hardcore bearings that can handle even the biggest pothole edinburgh city centre has to offer? Just smash the cup out the ballbearings sit in?
thats the one, knock the cup out from inside with a screwdriver. put the new cup in the freezer for a couple of hours before you fit it. oh and pour boiling hot water over the frame neck, should just pop in i've never worn a set of them out yet...
proper job those, held in proper races nice and strong. its the flop about original (cheap) yammy ones that cant take the pace. are they single or double row cal? look high spec lol
I take it I just knock the little cup out the top with a screwdriver or punch? Any tips, I wish I got it out before getting it coated so I could have used my blow tourch. Might try cutting into it with a dremmel.
Looking at buying stuff for rebuilding the rear arm going to be costly! Does anyone know the bearing codes for the cylindrical 4RR? so I can try and get them off simply bearings. I don't have a good track record for ordering the right parts, but I think I have got everything I need?
A small update. Used some scrap stickers from an old project for how I want the wheels to look.
Started cleaning up the head got ti dismantled and started cleaning and painting the thermostat housing, temprature sensor ect. The colours for the engine will be silver crankcase, black cylinder and red cylynder head.
Bought a pair of these little numbers 400mm diameter.
Cheers for the good comments guys. I have finally got the headstock fitted with the tapered bearings. Next jib will be to clean the harness up and possibly cover it in the cable tidy stuff doppa used on his bike apart from I will use red.
Yesterday I stripped the decal off my fuel tank. I was looking forward to giving it a good polish with my rotary polisher to remove all the scratches ect as the tank is basically a brand new oem one. I removed the sticker with nothing more than my thumb nail and a hairdryer. There is in my opinion a missleading video on you tube where the guy shows you him removing the decal with a paint stripping gun and a stanley blade. This metood might work but there is a very high chance of damage, compared to the method seen on del boys garage. Great videos he does for the hobby mechanic, currentley watching the fork seals episode alot in preporation of mines.
Removing the decal was a waste of time as they have laquered clean over it really pissed off when I noticed. The decal was coming off regardless.
The tank will now have to be powdercoated, so this got me thinking out the box as I would rather not get black if I have the opertunity to get what ever colour I wanted. As many of you will know there comes a point when you are building a bike you decide you wont be selling it ever after all the time and money you are putting into it for some scrote to trash lol.
So with this thought I will be making the bike my own creation. I have thought about getting the tank done white and painting the engine black with white yamaha letters. Here is a mock up I made on paint, excuse the exaust as it will be a shiny new Dep. I thought a black engine would really show the Dep off and contrast well with the tank.
Its a bit risky but in the flesh I think it might work really well, Would be interested in hearing your opinions, as I am starting to think my final design might look something like this. I will also be getting my forks done black like my frame.
Will check the graphics out mate. White rims could be an idea also, Its tough decisions on what the bike will look like. I change my mind all the time! White black and red are the theme though.
Going to get my harness cleaned up tonight and install it back on the frame, I will get some pics up later.
Yeah definatley going to go this route. I love the wheels on the old american classic cars with the white tyre walls, so cant beleive I never thought of it. Cheers guys.
Got all my bits to rebuild my rear suspension, my wallet took a beating!
Removed this bracket from the swingarm. It was in the way of my plastic caliper cover, as this is a dt r swingarm
Will paint over this with my trusty black Hamerite.
Got the forks dissmantled. Was surprised how easy it was thanks to doing my homework first! Dropped them off at the coaters, great service they do as I don't have to waste my time with masking ect as they do it themselves.
When I collect them I am handing the wheels in. Taking the bearings out and the are going to do the hub, spokes and rim all in one go in black.
Do you think I needed new linkage bearings? lol
Got my painted airbox in. Highly recommend the halfords heavy duty PU laquer seems very tough even a day after drying, compared to others I have used in the past that are just useless like the normal halfords one.
Very nice bike did you go with those stickers? I have ordered up a set of red 6mm ones today. They are so cheap I can try red later on and see what I like best, but I think white will look the best with the darkness of the bike and the white tank..
