I've had my 2002 TDR 125 for a little over a year now... Bought it as a none runner (had been lying up for about 3 years before i bought it.) Fixed it up within 6months and started riding it at the end of June this summer! I bought a custom Micron slip-on for it while it was getting fixed up (its now half supermoto). Started riding it and noticed it topped out at 55-60mph! Was very dissappointed. So eventually got around to derestricting it recently at the exhaust header (cut out the welded in tube) and brought it for a spin..... Much more torque and quicker going through the gears but still the top speed is awful at 60-65mph! What is wrong with the bike?? A 50cc would be able to keep up with me! what else can I do to the bike to make it faster.... I havn't got too much money so preferably on the cheap, but open to the more expensive options too?? Next I'm going to re-jet it but I know thats not gunna do much except for make it run a bit smoother!
so the only derestriction you have done is the exhaust ???
is there a reed switch on that model ??? have you done any of the other derestrictions ? air box snorkl - carb or cdi changed for older ones ect ect ?
also get some pics up if possible with close up of engine - carb - cdi ect
Hey, Thanks for the reply mate! No the only de-restriction I have done to the bike is the exhaust.... I wasn't aware that there was more restrictions on the TDR?? whats the airbox & carb one?? Any other tricks to get it running right?? It's terrible that the bike is so slow.... feels as if I'm driving a 50cc! I heard something about fully opening the power valve as well and earthing a wire from the CDI!?? are these good mods? I will get pictures as soon as my Dad will have a look at the bike for me (He is the mechanical brain ).
Does anyone know the standard main jet size for the 2002 model?? I have a large selection of jets here ranging from 150 - 350 so can fit one today! Only mods done to bike is micron can and the de-restriction of the exhaust! any help greatly appreciated!
Not sure if this helps any, but for the 2002 5ANC model, which I presume yours is, I can't find the jet size, but in the parts list I do have the part number for it, there are 3 different main jet part numbers , these being 137-14143-54-00, 137-14143-54-A1, and 4FU-14143-54-00, personally I'd plum for the last one as your cylinder is given as the 4FU nicosil plated type.
Thanks for the quick reply NEV.... So the last one in that list is 270, right? Should I go for 280 or 290 then with the exhaust mods I have? Again thank you!
Yeah thats it mate... 28mm! I'll stick in a 280 and go for a spin and see how she runs and then do a plug chop!! When I drive along at low revs atm the bike is real jumpy and doesn't run well at all.... This is since I de-restricted the exhaust! Would you recommend grounding the black/ blue wire from the CDI box as well and flipping the power valve 180degrees??
Yeah I seen on another thread on here that there is a mod u can do on the TDR where you earth a black/ blue wire from the CDI box! I'll try it anyways and see how it works! I'm pretty sure that it is connected to the servo, but i'll have to give it a check again!!
if the wire mod is the same principal as the tzr-r,then find the cdi wire plug and check the wires. the tzr was a green/black wire BUT.... it was the wire that went into the plug from the cdi,but didn't have a wire coming out of the other side of the plug. if that makes sense? if it has got a wire "missing" then thats the wire to earth. and defo one mod at a time lol
Thanks David! Yeah I rekon I'll get my Dad to do the power valve mod first and then afterwards the CDI jobby.... he's very busy lately so its hard to catch him at a good time to do it!
On this thread it shows pictures of where the wire is... it's black & blue on the TDR! http://dt125r.activeboard.com/t10609464/earthin-the-green-wire-on-a-tdr125/
I'm hoping one of these mods sort out the top speed for me.... I was in the market for a new bike (DRZ 400sm or else a restricted 600sm) because my TDR was so slow, until I stumbled across a video on youtube which had a link to this site saying about the de-restriction! If i can get my TDR full power then I'll happily stick with it for another year.... plus the smell of 2-stroke just can't be beaten!!!
Myself and my Dad got around to having a look at the bike today.... first we took off the exhaust and found that the powervalve was actually the right way around! So we then grounded the black/ blue wire and took the snorkel off the airbox..... My god the difference is unbelievable!! only took it out for a quick blast there and had it up to 90km/h before i even shifted into 6th gear!! definitely an extra 20km/h added to the 110km max I was getting out of it! runs a lot smoother throughout the whole rev range now too! delighted! Looking forward to a proper spin on it now!!
Thanks for the help lads, and anyone with a TDR.... ground that fookin wire!!
Got 122km/h (judging by my Koso ) out of it on the way to college this morning and I could feel there was still a bit left in it!! My next dilemma is the expansion chamber.... have a guy on the other side of Dublin who said he'll gut it for me for 50euro! I've read great things about doing this, but would i be better off getting a performance pipe or what!?? I am very broke atm is the reason why I don't just go for a Gianelli/ DEP one now, and i doubt I'll have the money til the summer!
Also, will gutting the std one make it much louder??? Cuz as is with just the Micron end-can I have people covering their ears when I crank it open fully going past!
gutting it wont make the noise increase i don't think, not sure with TDRs but with the DTs some people say the DEP is quicker but most swear that a gutted standard is quicker than a DEP so i would say if money is tight get the standard gutted, the silencer controls the noise the expansion controls the gases ;)
Thanks for the reply Seany! Yeah I'll be gutting the expanny... haven't the money for a new one unfortunately! I'm gunna wait until I've rebuilt the engine and ran it in before i do it though.... otherwise I'll be tempted to crank it as hard as possible to see the change it made on a freshly rebuilt engine!! haha!!
