How many miles before piston should be changed???

Thanks for the reply david!

Yeah I bought the bike with 12k miles on it! It was restricted the whole time until I got my hands on it and I would say it's only done 500miles since de-res!! So it has never been ridden too hard!! Since I've had it I've used nothing but Castrol fully synth 2t in it as well!

Gunna get the piston kit sorted asap though as I want some peace of mind! Might have a big problem with one of the forks which is gunna cost me a fair bit to get a new set.... disbelief I'm hoping not though!

How much would you reckon for a decent piston kit??

Thank you again for your reply,

Kev. aww

As above lads,

Just wondering, as the last thing I want is the chrome barrel fcuked! haven't the money for a new bike yet!! no

Bikes at 14k miles now and I can nearly be 100% certain the piston was never changed!

i'd have changed the piston, rings and small end bearing at 10.000 miles ashamed

have heard of them doing 20.000 miles on good oil and well looked after, not sure i'd risk it though.

mitaka piston kits are good and reasonably priced

Unfortunately piston and rings is just maintenance on two strokes :(

I'd change mine every 10k miles. I'm on about 15k bikes been nicked and still running original bore. Bore still clean too. Could do with a rebore but id rather replate the barrel.

£40 for a mitaka kit. Mitaka are very good!

Then you'll need a genuine he's gasket. 10-15 pounds.

Yeah its for the TDR.... But both engines are pretty much identical aren't they!? So the DT piston should fit provided its for similar year?

That is a very reasonable price I must say! I'll be so relieved once I have it done!!

Well no. I'd buy tdr purpose ones. Price should be the same. Just make sure you buy genuine head gasket. And mitaka are very sound to use.

Thanks for the reply nofre!

Yeah I thought myself that the TDR & DT wer the exact same engine, TZR is very much the same but with a different bottom end AFAIK confuse Still confused about the whole thing! hearing so many different things!

I don't wanna buy anything cheap and bad quality! Here's the actual piston I have my eye on http://www.pjme.co.uk/acatalog/Yamaha_DT125R_Engine_Parts_Top_End.html the Mitaka 1... I've only heard good things about that brand and thats why I want it! Not sure if it'll fit tho, cuz my barrel says 4fu 00 on the side!! hmm I'll be defo ringing them up before I order anything to make sure! Last thing I want is spending money on a kit that doesn't fit the bike!!

No calum my barrel is a 4fu 00 nickel plated, which the TZR shares with the TDR! I'm glad I've sorted all that out know any ways!! biggrin Tis a weight off my shoulders!

I'll stick up some progress pics of the rebuild! God I love gettin new parts for the bike.... picked up my new handlebars today! grips arrive on monday!! aww

well if you look after a 2 stroke they look after you.... i've never done a piston change and ii've done 21,000 miles on mine,, so that proves a dt is very reliable if you look after :)

Lol. Piston change IS looking after a two stroke. Id say after 10k miles change the piston. Examine the bore if its been looked after there might still be cross hatching. Good to do another 10k miles wothout loss of performance.

if you do have the barrel off to check just have it honed to de glaze the bore

i use

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEALEY-CYLINDER-HONING-HONE-TOOL-25mm-64mm-MEDIUM-/180719067548?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2a13b2219c

gives the rings another good seal.. but while u have the top end off u may aswell put a new set of rings in while ur in there for the £10-15 price tag

changing pistons/rings etc is a load of crap at 10-15k miles, if you look after it, it WON'T need a change, mine's done 30,000 miles almost and no piston change since FACTORY. I do a engine oil change every 1,200 miles and use decent 2 stroke oil.

It's not a load of crap son. I'd do mine every 10-15k to keep on top of maintenance, to make sure she's running as best she can with high compression. F00k knows what your compression must be like if you've got the same piston in after 30k+ miles lol or you might just ride like a granny ;)

You'll nofmtice decent power gains if you change your piston mate. Doubt its rubning top notch.

there's no rattling on mine even at almost 30k miles, so clearly is a load of crap ''son''. when there's rattling i will do a piston change, why bother when you don't need to. it hits 75+ so clearly nothing wrong.

yeah your right, but i dont see point in changing every 10-15k miles when i've got no rattling or anything , i can still do 75+ so all good, happy days :)

Sorry silly iphone typing.

You'll just have to trust me. Just because there isn't any rattling doesn't mean all is well. It's probably fine but a top end rebuild will restore your bike bacl to perfect health. Also its to help prevention. You saying i'll fix it when its broke is self defeatist. By the time you start to hear noise it will be because you've got a problem. You can start to cause bore damage by piston slap. So changing the piston and rings will avoid damage to the bore making the bore last longer.

At the end of it piston and rings is maintenance on two strokes. Mileage has actually no affect on when to service your bike. How you ride will determine whether or not it meeds a service.
