It's just not cooling it enough. It's absolutely fine, on my way to work in the mornings. But this recent heat wave tbe bike just can't cool it properly. It's been sound in the rain and cooler weather. It was like this standard, well since I've had a vapor, the RE clocks don't have temperature gauge lmao.

I'll sort it one day. I'm just keeping an eye on the temp. That's my only problem with two strokes. Heat seizures and seizures in general. If I come off because my bike seizes I will never forgive myself. It's one of those things why riding the bike puts me off. I can't afford to have an accident and I pray that I don't. But realising that it is more of an inevitability really winds me up.

Im sure there's something wrong with your cooling system then, a road bike never over heats surely, unless your riding it flatt out? The air should be enough to cool it

Aye that's very dodgey cal, i'd get a double rad setup chucked in.

When I went to collect my friend's Aprilia it was showing 96 degrees ticking over :s but that was due to having hardly any coolant in ( t'was a dog and got his cash back in the end).

The 230's have some great mid range Calz, and if you're gonna tinker with it even more then it should be a fair beast.

To be fair this DT has always ran hot. Does your freinds dt have a digital temo sensor?

In fact does anyone have a digital temp sensor? What are yours running at.

I'm currently working on the bike at the moment. Few scuffs on the bore but they've been there a while. Nothing major. The Wossner piston, perhaps a little over rated. Visual signs of wear over the exhaust port. Bearing in mind this barrel hasn't even seen 2K miles yet. I'm not impressed at the performance/Robustness of this build. I've seen Italian engines perform and look better than this... The only thing I had going for this engine is that it was going to be slightly faster with a semi decent reliability. Whilst it has yet to let me down, I'm not holding out for this lasting very long.

I've had my other engines bearings replaced, crank rebuilt and just needs fitting. I've got a feeling this TZR engine might not last too long.

Running hot usually means running lean, check plug colour, maybe carb air/fuel mixture needs setting up better? and maybe go for a colder plug.

Plug is golden brown. As said it is usually alright in cooler weather, and I found last year in the summer it was getting to around 90 if stood still.

If I give you the whole scenario can you let me know what you think.

It was a lovely hot morning, at a guess I'd say 25 degrees. I was out with a mate. We left my house went up the road. Warmed the bike up and then I let him have a go on it. From there we did approximately 3-4 miles. I was flat out on his bike but he was behind me the whole way so at a guess I'd say wasn't really taking it to the max. We pulled over to swap back and I noticed coolant was leaking. I was like well I'm not stopping now It's only the smallest amount and I checked the rad, plenty in there.

We then swapped back over and did another 5-10 miles. Most of which was up hill and I was caining the bike to get it up it. I wasn't going that fast probably 40-50 up this steep hill for amount 2-3 mins. I was blipping the throttle as I could see the temperature start to climb. Got to the top of this hill and the temperature read into the 90's. So pulled over and waited for the temperature to drop. Naturally the water pump isn't putting water around the engine so the reading kept climbing. As soon as I jumped back on the bike and got it going the reading went back to 70. It did that until I hit another hill which was about 1-2 miles later. Steeper hill this time, was only doing about 30 but the bike was pulling well. This was for about 30 seconds. Then flat and I pulled up minutes after.

The whole way down the hill was fine. Plenty of air and the temperature just fluctuated around 70 degrees. I think it rose to 80 when we hit the home straight and put the bikes away.

Thing is NEV the VHSA I put in there had TZR settings and it was just running stupidly rich. The only thing that I've changed is the needle to have a stupidly fat one in there. That was the only way I could get it to run without spluttering. Even now the oil pump is injecting FAR too much oil. The main jet is something silly 160 or maybe 150. As said the plug is a lovely golden brown, which I know doesn't necessarily mean sugar, however it's the best guess as to what the engine is doing. Seems okay bar the oil pump, which to tell you the truth I'm too scared to adjust. The manual says it should lift between 170-210mm and mines at 140 and still injecting far too much oil. Now I realise that there is no reading for the TZR and I'm assuming it is the same pump as the older DTR's. Hopefully this isn't the case or maybe I'm not adjusting it correctly. It's miles better than what it was when I got it but it is still running rich on oil. For the moment I don't mind spending £20 every 3 weeks on oil because at least I know it's using it. Although I'm aware that too much oil can sometimes be just as bad as not enough.000

As said I'm committed to going down the extra cooling route because the TZR has a much bigger radiator with much better air flow than the DTR. So an extra rad won't hurt.

It is bizarre. Riding in the rain Friday evening and the temperature reading doesn't budge over 70 and whilst moving it just sits at around 60. It's just in this heat it doesn't like it.

Still I'm going to lower the needle by the most fractional amount and chuck a dirty, big main jet in there.

I know im a amateur at this stuff, but my CAR had a similar problem with that, was a combination of a faulty thermostat switch so it was sticking closed / open randomly not letting the coolent around and a airlock in the system.

You're right, that is a very likely scenario. Although so long as you keep the air running through the radiator and not too much strain the bike keeps cool.

You're right though. A sticky thermostat would cause the heat to rise.

Try removing the thermostat should help.

Going to get back on this project this winter. Bike's getting stripped back to the frame and everything down to the powdercoaters. Now I need to sort the car out first but hopefully that'll be done by the end of next month, then Nov,Dec, Jan and Feb I'll strip and rebuild the bike to brand spanking new. New panels, Graphics and bearings all round. It's just embarrassing at the moment riding this bike :( It's so battered.

Need to save up some wedge and get it done :D

And one day it'll go back to standard. Apart from the engine. But one day it will go back to standard wheels and forks. Purely because this bike will become a classic and be worth a lot more standard. And because I'll be buying a Lanza which will donate the parts and the Lanza will have my sumo setup :D I do love this bike.

My new graphics kit arrived for this bike today :D

Come January there is going to be some big developments for this project. It will be at its complete stage...with a bit of luck. I won't spoil it but got some well deserving parts for this bike on its way from Japland, as well as some finishing touches here, there and everywhere. Watch this space :D

When do you reckon it'll be finished?

Probably never. I'm working on my starlet now. This works, it's supermoto, great brakes, tuned engine. Everything else is purely cosmetics. I'm building another engine for it as we speak and have a dremel with a polishing wheel and have just been cleaning the casting flaws in the bottom end. I'll leave the top end to the specialist. Polish up the crank cases over Christmas.

Yeah as soon as I've done my starlet I'll get this to the powder coaters for a full respray. At the moment there's no hurry

Cheers mate. She is so nice I absolutely have so much fun on this bike. For the last 3 months I haven't gone faster than 40 mph, no word of a lie, but still love riding it. Don't stop for speed bumps or jumps. Chuck it into corners. Jump up and down on the pegs. Just goon about on it having a right ol laugh.

There is definitely more to come for this project. A lot more modifications go the frame. I've got a new graphics kit for it ready to go on. Mew paint job. Modify the clutch perch to take a asv lever. New pegs. Loads of bits. It's just I'm working on my car at the mo so this has been shelved. But it gets ridden daily and I don't want that to stop

Cals not running an air box

perhaps this causes it to run slightly lean
