LMAO it is too funny how things work out! Was originally looking for a DTR 125 for a project bike, and missed one for 400 by an hour the other day!  So set my sights on an Aprilia RS 125 seeing as DTs are very hard to come by here, and especially for so cheap!! So I put up a wanted add on another forum to no avail..... only seen this today on the local classifieds and going to see it tomorrow - 2005 Hyosung GT 250 Comet - 400euro:

Hyosungcomet250_zpsa96d9d32.jpg

The guy said all it needs is a good service, front tyre and tax! Hopefully should have it tomorrow night to have a tinker with! Looks in good condition to me!  Any you guys ever owned one or know anything to look out for in them?  These bikes are selling for about 1,100-1,200 here so if I slap a bit of money into it should make a nice little bit of profit! biggrin

Lol that is what I previously thought about the Hyosung mate.... BUT... you are quite wrong there!  They are made in Korea and have been making engines for Suzuki for some time! The SV650 for example has the same engine as the GT650R!  and the Comet 250 (or gt 250r) is a scaled down version of that engine! There are a few flaws with them, but check out this review of the Hyosung 125 & 250 by MCN..... http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bikereviews/searchresults/Bike-Reviews/Hyosung/Hyosung-GT250-Comet-2004-current-2/

Cam chain tensioner seems to be the main flaw in these bikes, so I'll be sorting that to make it reliable! The main Kawasaki dealer here in Dublin are also after becoming a Hyosung dealer a few years ago because the build quality of them have become so good!  I will make a project thread on this if I get it and let every1 know how I get on with it, any problems, flaws etc. wink

I will say what everyone else will say, don't buy a chink bike lol they are seemingly utter crap mate, not owned one myself but in my trade I will never touch a chink lawnmower cause they are utter dross. And the bikes are probably made in the same factory lol.

I would keep your powder dry mate and get a nice jap bike or aprillia. But if you want a cheapo bike to tinker with over winter and sell to someone so be it. Just don't go throwing money at it.

Yeah I thought exactly the same mate when they 1st came out here!  My Dad's mate actually imported a load of Hyosung scooters when I was like 12 & my Dad said they were absolute crap!  But then the real bikes were properly introduced in 2004/5 and they had stepped up their game big time!  I would love a go of the GT650R... has the same engine has the SV, but Hyosung tuned an extra few horses out of their version to give them the upper hand!! Seen a few going past before and they have the exact same industrial thump out of them!

As I said,  I will soon find out what the build quality is like when I'm taking it all apart! smile  So will keep you all updated, cuz they are meant to be very cheap over in UK too.... would make a nice daily hack for some of you who don't want to have their prized DT with them all the time! biggrin Going to see it at 9 tonight!

I would have said the same a few years back. AVOID Hyosung, because I thought they were chink. But no they are not. ANd actually are good spec.

Look at that USD and twin cylinder. Clever stuff. I wouldn't bother with it. Don't be expecting the power of the RS lmao and I think you'll be alright.

Personally I would stick to the two stroke. A little bit easier to sort out (Engine Wise) when they go wrong. Last thing you want for 400 euros is sorting out engine problems on a 4T. It is just not going to warrant doing it. At least two stroke rebuilds are relatively cheap :D

Good luck anyway.

Maybe start up a build thread?

Yeah I know it's gunna be pretty under-powered (28hp give or take) but it's just something to tinker around with and make a bit of profit off! Still undecided whether or not I'll use it for the winter or not, as selling it around december definitely isn't a good idea! haha! As for the engine rebuild, I seriously doubt this will need one as there's only 18k kms on it!  My Dad is coming along with me and he's a bike mechanic so he'll be able to tell straight away if the engine sounds like sh1t!  I think it will be in good condition tbh with such low miles!

Yeah I will put up a build thread mate!  Let you all know how I get on!  It's really just gunna be a learning curve for me tbh, and I wont be changing much lookswise!  Next project will definitely be a 2t as I want to try an engine rebuild myself without any help! wink

Firstly where are you measuring the bhp! The dt is 15bhp out the factory! I'd be surprised if it's got as much as 28bhp even for a 250. Maybe low 20's.

Secondly you do realise mileage has nothing to do with engine condition. Failure to maintain will kill any engine long before mileage has a factor. Engines are built to last.

Well picked her up there... only home with it a few mins!  Dodgy aul drive home so it was.... flat front tire and brakes were barely working, which he never mentioned to me.  Had to use the engine to slow it down.  BUT..... saying that I am very happy with it! Needs a good bit of work, but it is a lovely driver I must say! Doesn't feel like a 250 with the general road presence (tank is fooking HUGE! and sounds nice too). It is a little underpowered but definitely feels pokey enough for what it is!  More power than my TDR 125 thats for definite.

And Calum I was just going by the above MCN review, they reckon 28hp & 85mph top speed.... I'd easily believe that too!  Actually seen on another owners review that yer man got 155km/h out of his, which is pretty impressive!  It was a bit spluttery at times, but after a good service I'd say it'll be spot on!  Carbs definitely need a good clean and balance plus the usual bits and bobs.  New front tyre and fork seals also needed and the front & back brakes need to be bled and generally serviced.  Should be fun! biggrin

It's too dark to get pictures of it now ( I haven't had a proper look at it myself as it's pitch black ) but will get a few tomorrow!  Will start a build thread as soon as i can!  Reckon I'll make a start at cleaning the carbs tmz and will order a few bits tonight to start the serviceing! smile  God I love getting new bikes! haha! biggrin
