DT125RE '06 Project - UPDATES PEOPLE! :D

Hi all, thanks for stopping by at this thread. This is my recently purchased Yamaha DT125RE. This bike initially looked solid and I will not admit, it wasn't even close. All the photos I have posted, are where I am at so far, there's a fair bit left todo. My big issue today was the wiring loom looks like some one on a dtr has done a burnout on it so its needs fixing in a few places. The one thing I don't wanna do is give up, this bike has cost me so much that It would be a waste not to finish it. Leave a comment tell me what ya think! Cheers,

Here is a detailed list of stuff I have done to the bike since my ownership.

New handle bars
New grips
New clutch and brake lever
Straightened the old gear lever
Replaced the expansion chamber
Replaced the end can
Replaced the swing arm
Installed shorter shock linkages
New bar mirrors
New indicator relay
New rear tyre (Coming through 4/01/2014)
New tail tidy
New number plate
New L plates
New chain
New passenger foot pegs

I think there is more but I haven't mentioned probably because I have forgotten.

Stuff left to do:

Brake overhaul (Front and rear)
Oil and fluid check
Neutral light does not work
Rebuild the front forks with new fork seals
Install silicon hose for the emissions pipe on the expansion chamber
Sort out the wiring loom and the rear lights
Grease the head stock bearings
Powervalve needs looking at
Put the rear wheel back on
New rear indicators (water is behind the lens)

 YAIS

Yamaha Air Intake System

Considered a restriction by many but the idea is that it creates a vacuum or some sort of pressure that forces air back into the cylinder. Or lost charge back into the cylinder and is suppose to be an enhancement that Yamaha Developed to bring the power output back up after emission laws butchered its performance.

What do I think?? I've had both DEP and standard. Initially Impressed by DEP. That's worn off now. I've had gutted standard and DEP was better than that. But that's just my impression. All I gained from gutting the standard was louder bike. Maybe more power but I didn't notice it.

That said I never dyno'd any of these options so can only give opinions which many disagree with

thank you kindly for the welcome! :D Yep that pipe is known as a breather or emissions pipe or quite rightly put by Calum as a YAIS. Anyway I felt that a £180 Dep kit might not have been the way forward as the previous Dep which came off was only 8 months old and it was badly holed. I reckon an old school B1G and some electro-plating might be a more viable option as you don't get the extra bend in a B1G. Dep's have that extra bend which actually slightly restricts the engine. I like the idea of an electronic "high performance" timing system. I might invest in one of those, which I was reading about on this forum! MENTAL! :D

Not made a recent update for bike, so here it is! I have taken the front forks off and I'm now in the process of rebuilding them. I have managed to fix the electrics issue by swapping the CDI with an older one, works a treat. I am currently stuck at getting the bike running. I think its a piston ring or two that has gone. I have been fault diagnosing for about a week and a bit now and thats the conclusion I have come to, over everything else I have looked at. The whole project is now on the back burner as I have exams to be getting ready for, so sadly she'll be neglected for another fews months yet!

Been a little while folks, lots has been done. The last thing on my mind was to post to the page. So here goes a belated update! :) So I finished the bike, got it road legal, Taxed, MOT'ed and then Insured, oh it passed the MOT with flying colours! :P

So to start from the beginning, I got 390.1 miles out of her and boy were they good times! Used the motorway each day, in the fast lane, maintaining a steady 70mph with space for more, anyways. Was riding home about 6 weeks ago after dropping my brother off at school and the bugger seized up on me. The photos you are about to see shows what happened. If you don't figure it out, it was a small end bearing break up due to a badly worn piston cross pin getting reused, look how worn out it is! :( Anyway, have a look through them, tell me what you think and what else you wanna see! :P

 SAM_0257.JPG

Out with the bike at my local stomping ground! :)

5 days later! :(

10513432_10152515557822320_2134736940011766223_n.jpg

deep score! :(

10420228_10152515557812320_673454104997979779_n.jpg

anything look wrong with this piston? ;) ahah

SAM_0282.JPG

not many photos of me splitting the engine apart. Here it is, in two pieces! Gearbox is all good, no need to replace anything here.

SAM_0283.JPG

I needed to get the crankshaft split. New big end bearing and pin, new small end bearing and pin, new main bearings and seals. Went to my local engine and got the whole job done for £122, which included seals and main bearings! :) he only charged me £15 for a brand new set of main bearings and seals, SCORE! :D

SAM_0286.JPG

Top end rebuild complete, time to bag this up and put it under my bed where its nice and safe! Bought a recondition barrel from Deeteemx, thank you! :)

SAM_0287.JPG

Another angle! :P this one shows my MIG welder! Can you see the bike in the background? looking very sad for its self! :(

10654164_10204133377802069_1301106493_n.jpg

Bought a carb today for £25 and look what it does? the air screw moves all the way out! :D :D

Here are a few photos I forgot to add! :)

SAM_0291.JPG

These are some of the damaged parts that will need replacing! Look at that piston pin ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

SAM_0292.JPG

You can see whats left of the top end bearing, it should have 15 pins in it I think??? only found three lol! :P

SAM_0293.JPG

piston looks nicely broken in, i'll use this in my 95mph dtr project!

SAM_0294.JPG

nackered pin went in the bike on a CHEAP ASS rebuild and this is what it has done to the eye of the top end of my conrod, basically beaten the crap out of it. nothing could be done to fix this so I had a new conrod fitted, genuine YAMAHA! :D

SAM_0295.JPG

Better angle of the damage! :(

To finalise this update, I'd like to give you all some statistics.

Firstly how much spent on this rebuild? £250 roughly.

Total spent since December 2013 (when I bought the bike). Including the price of the bike at £1500 which was with no tax or mot, its probably needed about £850 worth of parts since then. Every day i rode I could always think of things it really needed, Im thinking about what it needs now lol.

Who pays for all of this? Me. Every single pay check I have gained since the purchase of this bike has gone straight into the bike. This is why it has taken as long as it has!

Finally, will I keep it? Yeah of couse lol its a DT broooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooap! ;)

ride safe all!

Time for a very large and late update. So its been too long since I last replied on this thread. The engine is now about 5,000 miles into its new top and bottom end, still running sweet as a nut. Most recently the starter motor has packed up and is in the process of being over hauled, I will post photos of this once the final parts have arrived. Here are a few photos of the progress over the last few months.

1.jpg

A photo of the bike 200 miles after the rebuild! Very happy and satisfied with my work at this point! :)

2.jpg

Next job on the list is to sort out the indicators, both of the rears had packed up due to water leaking in behind the lens.

3.jpg

The wiring back here was pretty awful as well so required more time than I thought to put right.

5.jpg

All sorted, for now anyway!

6.jpg

Autumn of last year, thought I'd do a little photo shoot of the bike as it was!

7.jpg

February of this year I finally got a performance pipe! (only the front as Im a minimum wager)

8.jpg

Took a little while to get the main jet sizes right but satisfied with the results. Started with a 240 main and went down to 230, then 220. Was happy with 220 main and a 17.5 pilot.

9.jpg

So shiny! :D

10.jpg

Next up was my sticking rear brake. This problem arose two weeks before the MOT, my luck I guess.

11.jpg

Thats the two seals and piston, not a pretty sight. What I learnt about this was that my rear brake caliper is from an earlier DT. As I bought a seal and piston kit from Yamaha that I was assured would be the right size. When it did arrive, they weren't even close. Made the mistake of buying the brake pads before I knew what the caliper was, so running earlier pads too. No problems with the disc or the rear hub, thankfully! ;)

12.jpg

Doesn't look too bad in there, not much muck to scoop out before the new seals and piston go back in.

13.jpg

By far the trickiest job with this was getting the piston and seals to fit back inside, was so so difficult. I did it eventually, had to move my work indoors as it got dark and very late lol.

14.jpg

New, older pads in along with a new rear disc. MINT

15.jpg

Two weeks ago, I decided to paint up some of the shabbier looking engine parts. So far I've painted the YPVS cap and housing. The front sprocket chain guard and the Oil pump cover.

16.jpg

There's the nice and fresh housing! Pretty pleased with my work. Polishing the engine casing just isn't my thing as it would be way too difficult to keep clean!

17.jpg

Theres the housing and cap fitted. I decided whilst doing this to over haul the powervalve with a wire brush. Also fitted in this photo is my reed block spacer (5mm). Makes a good difference in my opinion!

18.jpg

Next on my list is SM'ing this thing. Picked up a yamaha xt125x wheel, for £35. I wasn't going to say no, and thankfully it all fits pretty good but I will need a spacer kit for it and a front brake caliper bracket. For now I am on the look out for some DTX or WRX wheels.

11888029_10153559527002320_8319955450153578190_n.jpg

Loads has been done since the previous photo. After I had the bike stolen, I fitted new original indicators, spokewrapz and i've dropped the bike back to the original suspension linkages as riding the bike jacked up is just too much like hard work.

11052422_10153579919617320_2041548767490229055_n.jpg

Spot the DEP end can? Finally running the full system after about a 5 month wait. Sounds mint and runs like a dream!

Would just like to thank everyone along the way who has provided me with help, support and parts as I wouldn't be able todo this with out you all!

Big hand to DeeTeeMX for his support as well, trusted seller although I've only ever dealt with him in person. Hands down paid for his retirement and projects with the amount of money I've spent with him. Thanks for all the parts Jerry! :)

More too come soon! On the look out for a set of SM wheels if anyones got any? ;)

Whats left todo:

Braided brake hoses
Front brake overhaul (Disc, pads and piston seal kit)
New front mudguard
New rear plastics
Re-cover seat (as i've got a small hole in mine) :(
I would like to tackle the mess that is my loom.
I also wanna strip the bike right the way back to the frame and respray!
