New DT125r Project

So, on a bit of a whim, my mate and i picked up a fair condition CAT B bike with the intention of restoring it.

Obviously being a CAT B write off meant we could not keep the frame and as luck would have it i managed to bag an unregistered frame to transplant.

We did a fair ammount of research prior to this as obviously registration will be the end plan.

Turns out (Cheers for the heads up scrim), a nice chap over on the YAMAHA DT CLUB forum is a DVLA registration officer and armed with his knowledge we have started the project to rebuild a bike and then hopefully submit it for registration and issue of an age related plate.

Having gone through a previous project a couple of years ago and not wanting to throw money at it, we decided on stripping the frame and then applying a hammerite finish as opposed to powder coating which from experience can be a royal pain if it chips on a build.

Progress has been steady and the following jobs have been done to date-

1/ frame and swing arm stripped and painted

2/ Shock  and shock linkage cleaned, painted and overhauled

3/Engine rebuilt

4/ re assembled frame and swing arm

5/ wiring harness cleaned, re wrapped in proper loom tape, and re fitted

6/ engine re fitted

Will update on progress as we go.

Need a YEIS bottle as well. Coming along nicely. Don't start it or run it without a YEIS.

Got her running today, third kick While it was sitting wheel less on my work mate!! wink Looks like I have my work cut out though as carb definitely needs setting up- something I am not great at!
Carb is spotless, 240 main, 25 pilot but speed does not seem to increase when I turn the screw in either direction from 1.5 turns out??
Initially would not idle without choke but that's now ok, re stripped it, all ports cleaned again and a split intake rubber replaced! Still got a pilot screw and tick over issue though.
Where is the cheapest place for jets? eBay is fine but even they seem pricey? I have a spare 220 main and 20 pilot that I may try?
Definitely need to source a battery tray and standard air box although can't bring myself to pay eBay rip off prices!

I hope you know putting a #220 main jet in can cause it to run lean.

Yeah. Not really helpful though. There is no context. Running a #240 main jet can cause it to run lean. Different bikes, different parts of the world all cause 2 strokes to do wierd things.

Plus #210 is standard on a DTRE and mine never missed a beat.

I would not bother trying to set the carb up without the airbox fitted and a well sealed filter, the main jet whatever size you end up running wont affect your low speed issues what so ever. Stick with the standard pilot and 1 1/2 turns out on the screw I think thats standard on most of them. Then use the throttle stop for the correct idle speed. You will know when your riding it if 1 1/2 turns is no good as they usually take longer to drop down to idle. I have messed with the pilot system loads of times getting rid of the low end flat spot when removing the snorkel. I have a brand new Ledar power nozzle in the carb for my 89 that I bought new. Going to have loads of fun setting that up when I get it back on the road with its new pipe etc. I had my 07 RM125 so smooth you could let it tick over or burble round on it like a DT but still with killer topend power.

3 basic steps to remember for setting up a carb on a 2stroke

Pilot system only affects idle to about 1/3 throttle

Needle clip position 1/3 to 2/3 mid range

Main jet 2/3 to full throttle

By "throttle stop" you mean the idle stop screw?
