as the title says im currently swapping the front end of my dt for the yz usd forks wheel and caliper. also alot of work has been put in to this bike as shortly after i brought it the crank case split so i brought a a bottom end from a 97 bike to replace it but wen i started to remove stuff from the bike i found that alot of bodge work was done to it  so i decided to strip the whole lot i sprayed the frame black and the swing arm silver i got rid of the loom as it had been hacked at andwhen the owner before me had it somone tryed stealling it and cut a big chunk of it near the ignition/. so i brought a brand new loom from a yamaha dealer (not cheap lol) genuine chain and sprockets (was meant to buy the standard non o ring chain coz it was cheaper but they gave me the o ring one instead so i got it for the price of the cheaper one, thanks yamaha! ) new reg as old one was nackered,i got the rear brake powder coated blue and back plate black new pads and discs front and rear sprayed the tank black (btw the bike was purple! disbelief) cut down gutted and polished the end can (dep) replace all bearings and seals in rear sus linkage (when i picked up the back end the rear wheel was left behind on the floor lol had some serious play in it) and probaly some other stuff but cant remember iv got recipes from yam dealer rackin up over 1200 quid! and it still aint finished cry anyway heres some pics enjoy  oh yeah all new plastics from yamaha aswell apart from front and rear fender that was from ebay as they are polisport ones.

it wasnt bad but there was one bit that most peaple might find difficult
i used the original dt stem thats pressed into the bottom yoke but i had a one off collar made to fill the gap on the top yoke but had the bottom of the stem turned down so it would fit in the bottom, tht let me use dt steering bearings so tht i didnt have to mod the head tube to get yz ones to fit . and the other issue was tht the dt stem is a fair bit shorter than the yz thats why the fork legs poke out the top of the top yoke also because of that there wasnt enough clearance for the bars to clamp on,but on the yz top yoke you can remove/adjust the bar clamps (not like the dt ones which are all moulded as one piece) so i just removed the bar clamps and put 2 beefy washers underneath to raise it up so the bars would clamp on ill post pics to make it clearer

as you can see in the first pic the stems are quite different
2nd top yoke collar
3rd you can see the bottom of the stem has been turned down to fit
4th you see the problem i had when trying to fit the bars
5th i used 2 head bolt washers from a fiat to raise bar clamps these where perfect size :)
6th i used original top thrust bearing race as a shim to raise/support top yoke
i got replacement bearings from ebay which instead of the top bearing being a thrust type they replaced it with a skinny taper roller makes it alot easier to fit no messing about with lots of little ball bearings getting dropped and lost all over the place ( p-k-n trading. from ebay bout 15 -20 quid)

done a very tidy job of that considering how the tollerances on everything were working against you! did you do the machineing yourself? how did it work out on overall fork length (ie top yoke to axle) compaired to the origional forks?
very jealous looks well good in the pics, need to get some usd's on mine at some point well fed up with the origional 80's forks, they look like their for offroad but then you find the mile long spring spacer...
let us know how they handle

oh and that can is outrageous biggrin

cheers fuggie! na i got my dad to get the machine shop at his work to the machineing for me and make the collar :) and yeah the bars have like 2-3 mm clearance from the top of the fork legs i got as close as i could so that the clamping area on the yoke wer on a flat part of the fork legs coz some sections are tapered. as for the fork length the yz ones are a fair bit longer but some of that extra length got taken up at the top end as its all pokin out the top of the top yoke, when i sit on the bike tho it doesnt feel like im sittin on a chopper lol yea think the hieght is ok dont know what it handles like yet, as soon as i got out for a burn ill update on that, when u do decide to go usd gimmie a shout n ill advise u to the best of my knowledge m8 if need i could probaly get ur stem machined and a spacer made for you if u cant find anywon local to do it for u

oh yeah the can lookin bad ass, cant beat old skool dep lol its loud as fook aswell after i pulled out the wadding, sounds like a proper old skool air cooled smoker lol

that plates looking good, hows it look on the frame? a idea for ya, my mates kdx has two loops welded on the frame as standard that come off the bottom rails out to the side to protect the engine cases, thinking of sticking something like that to mine then bash guard over the top

yea i know what u mean my dads got one only thing is thos loops only protect against big stuff hitting the engine but not not stones n other crap like roost wen racing in enduros ect , plus i dnt think theres a lot poking out from the dt engine spose the water pump does a little bit but not to bad. what im gonna do is make it so that the bash plate protrudes either side of the frame and covers the width of the engine to offer better protection also gonna get some sump gaurd foam u can get from most online mx shops to cut to size, mainly for the holes at the top end of the plate jus to stop crap getting in. also in the pic if u look closely u can see iv marked a section to the right hand side thats roughly how big it needs to be so i can make two guards out of this one plate. when iv got one to fit my bike ill replicate another to fit aswell n maybe sell it for a couple of quid with all the fittings ect needed to fit, to another dt owner wink

good idea with the foam, read in tbm a while back its what the proper race teams do as it weighs less than having mud stuck under there
